BOMBERS LAND KOWALSKI

By Mike Stackhouse

It’s possible the Flin Flon Bombers have made the biggest splash of the trade deadline and we are still a couple of days away from the January 10th date where rosters, essentially, become frozen for the rest of the year.

On Tuesday, Flin Flon acquired 1999 F Cade Kowalski (Morden MB) from the Weyburn Red Wings for 1999 F Dawson McKenzie (Winnipeg MB) and future considerations.

In Kowalski, the Bombers get the 2018 SJHL Rookie Of The Year after he picked up 11-goals and 49-assists in 58-games.  He was on his way to another banner campaign this year with 14-goals and 25-assists in 33-games. He’s slated to go to Ferris State this upcoming Fall, so even though he’s not a 20-year-old, he’s a rental for the rest of this year.

“We feel that a player of his talent, you have to make a run at,” says Flin Flon Coach/General Manager Mike Reagan.  “Fortunately, we were able to come up with a deal. He will have a huge impact with what we know about him as a person and with his talent.  I think he rounds out our top nine very nicely and he’s just one more player our opponents have to worry about.”

In McKenzie, the Wings acquire an offensively skilled forward who should fit into a prominent role immediately and be a player they can build around next year.  McKenzie had 9-goals and 13-assists in 34-games this year after scoring 6-goals and 17-assists in 54-games as a rookie. In his final year of Midget AAA, McKenzie put up 54-points in 41-games with the Winnipeg Thrashers.
