Before their game in Notre Dame was over, the Weyburn Red Wings were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 1999, as the Estevan Bruins punched their post season ticket on their own, beating the Kindersley Klippers 6-3.
That ensures that the Bruins and Klippers will meet up in the Sherwood Conference Survivor Series, and it also means the Bruins can still catch Kindersley for 4th place, and home ice for that Best-of-Five, which is likely to begin March 1st. Estevan is three points back of Kindersley, with a game in hand (three remaining to Kindersley's two).
The Bruins stormed out to a 4-0 lead through 20 minutes on Sunday night. Dylan Smith (1g-1a), Alex Cote (2g) and Calder Neufeld (2a) combined for six points. Matt Brykaliuk (1g-1a), Wyatt Garagan and Connor Milligan rounded out the scoring. Kyle Davies, Beau Stewart and Bradley Buckingham scored for Kindersley.
Estevan's now off until Friday/Saturday, when they meet Weyburn for a home-and-home, games that now won't matter to the Wings, but will play a big part in who gets home ice in the Survivor Series. The Bruins finish the regular season a week from Tuesday, home to Notre Dame.
The Klippers have a tough finish, hosting Nipawin on Saturday, before heading to Humboldt for a make-up game on Tue/Feb/26.
Connor Creech stopped all 31 shots sent his way in Humboldt, as the Battlefords North Stars beat the Broncos 1-0 for the second time this season at the Elgar Peterson Arena.
Blake Young scored the game's only goal, and it came early, on the powerplay, 6:53 into the contest.
Matt Hrynkiw made 22/23 saves in the loss, keeping his save percentage at .940% on the season.
Humboldt locked up top spot in the North last week. Nipawin can still tie them in points, and their season series was deadlocked, but the Broncos will finish ahead of the Hawks in overall wins, which is the second tie breaker.
The Stars will be unable to get into the top three, as they're seven back of Flin Flon with three to play. They'll have home ice in the Survivor Series against either Melfort of La Ronge.
In Sunday's late game, the Notre Dame Hounds out-scored the Weyburn Red Wings 7-4.
Dion Antison (1g-2a), Brandon Millin (1g-2a), Dillion Schwartzenberger (1g-1a), Blaine Thomson (1g-1a), Carson Grolla, Kale Derkson and Jared Martin scored as the Hounds ended a seven game winless skid.
Miguel Pereria, Austin Roesslein, Josh Lees and Ryan Cooper did the scoring for the Wings, who were mathematically eliminated from post season play on Sunday.
The Hounds will finish third in the Sherwood and face either Melville or Yorkton in Round 1.
