2015-16 Players of the Month

January 2016

The RBC SJHL Player Of The Month for January is 1995 F Alex Smith (Edmonton AB) of the Flin Flon Bombers.  Smith collected points in all eleven games for the month, scoring 9-goals and 15-assists along the way.  He capped the month with a scholarship to Michigan Tech and he also passed last year’s scoring champion, Travis Mayan, for the league lead in points as he enters February with 26-goals and 46-assists, two points ahead of Mayan.  Among the highlights for Smith were three straight 3-point games to kick off the post-Christmas schedule and he had multiple point games in eight of the eleven overall.

The IBAS SJHL Defenseman Of The Month is 1995 D Branden Scheidl (Saskatoon SK) of the Kindersley Klippers.  Scheidl has enjoyed a breakout offensive season in his final  year of Junior A hockey, scoring 3-goals and 6-assists in 12-games during the month of January.  Scheidl had a pair of three point games this month, including January 16th at Estevan and January 23rd at Yorkton.  He enters February with 8-goals and 19-assists in 43-games; which is five more points than what he had accumulated in his first two seasons combined.

The Sasktel SJHL Goaltender Of The Month is 1995 G Alexi Thibaudeau (Calgary AB) of the Notre Dame Hounds.  Thibaudeau put forth his best month in January, backstopping the Hounds to a 5-2-and-1 record when he was between the pipes.  He also posted a GAA of 1.73 and a SPCT of .949 to go along with one shutout as the Hounds have entered the conversation of finishing in the top six overall.   Ironically, one of Thibaudeau’s better games this month came in a loss, when he made 59-stops on 61-shots in a loss to Battlefords.  He shutout Estevan on January 19th and had four games in which he allowed one goal or less.  For the season, Thibaudeau is 15-15-2-and-3 with a 3.07-GAA and .903-SPCT.  He also has two shutouts.

The SJHL Rookie Of The Month is 1997 G Brenden Newton (Medicine Hat AB) of the Flin Flon Bombers.  Newton took advantage of an injury to regular starter Zac Robidoux and carried the hot hand all month, finishing 8-and-1 with a 1.89-GAA and .936-SPCT.  He also had shutouts, at home, against La Ronge on January 16th and then again on the 20th at Notre Dame.  Newton won his first seven starts in January and was on a personal nine game win streak before suffering a loss at the end of a grueling four game road trip at the end of the month.  Newton has put himself third overall in GAA at 2.37.  He’s 12-5-and-1 and has a SPCT of .926 this season.

December 2015

The RBC SJHL Player Of The Month is 1995 F Brandon Switzer (Brandon MB) of the Flin Flon Bombers. Switzer picked up 7-goals and 8-assists in 8-games played. He had four multi-point games, including a four-point effort December 12th against Melville. He had two three-point games in back to back efforts in Kindersley and Battlefords on the 17th and 19th. He's up to 21-goals and 24-assists in 34-games on the year.

The IBAS SJHL Defenseman Of The Month is 1996 D Eric Sinclair (Kenora ON) of the Melfort Mustangs. Sinclair had a goal and seven assists in eight games during the month of December, finishing with a flurry as he had a goal and five assists over the final three games on the 16th, 18th, and 19th against Battlefords, Humboldt and then Humboldt again, respectively. Sinclair entered January with 6-goals and 17-assists in 35-games, but he's off to a roaring start in the New Year already as he had four points on Saturday against Nipawin.

The SaskTel SJHL Goaltender Of The Month is 1996 G Zac Robidoux (Winnipeg MB) of the Flin Flon Bombers. Robidoux went 5-and-1 with a 1.68-GAA, 2 shutouts, and a .948-SPCT in helping lead the Bombers into the upper echelon of the league as we head into the second half of the year. Robidoux blanked Nipawin on December 4th and Melville on December 12th and then followed that up by allowing just one in a game against La Ronge on the 16th. For the season, he's 14-8-0-and-3 with a 2.57-GAA and .925-SPCT. He has three shutouts.

The SJHL Rookie Of The Month is 1997 G Taryn Kotchorek (North Battleford SK) of the Battlefords North Stars. Kotchorek went 3-and-3 while taking a hold of the number one goaltending position with the Stars, compiling a 1.84-GAA and .925-SPCT. He also posted shutouts in back to back games December 11th and 12th against Humboldt and La Ronge, respectively. Overall, he's 12-3-1-and-2 with a 1.91-GAA, .925-SPCT, and four shutouts.

November 2015

For the second month in a row, the RBC SJHL Player Of The Month (November) is 1995 F Travis Mayan (Rimbey AB) of the Melfort Mustangs.  Mayan rattled off 10-goals and 11-assists in 9-games played to increase his lead atop the SJHL scoring race.  Mayan ended November with five straight 3-point performances and has points in every game but two this season.  He leads the league in goals with 27, is second in the league in assists with 24, and leads Igor Leonenko of the Stars by 10-points.  

The IBAS SJHL Defenseman Of The Month is 1996 D Kendall Fransoo (North Battleford SK) of the Battlefords North Stars.  Fransoo, who is in his fourth season and still has another year of eligibility, has played 157 games in the SJHL, all with the Stars.  This past month, he had 1-goal and 7-assists in 12-games as he played an integral role on a blueline that has been elite on, arguably, the league’s best team this season.  Fransoo has 2-goals and 8-assists in 30-games on the year.

The SaskTel SJHL Goalie Of The Month is 1995 G Kris Joyce (Prince George BC) of the La Ronge Ice Wolves.  Joyce was a big reason why the Ice Wolves went undefeated for the month, compiling a personal 6-0-0-and-2 ledger to go with a GAA of 1.96 and a SPCT of .950.  Joyce’s first six starts of the month resulted in games where he allowed two or less goals.  He’s 12-9-1-and-2 overall with a 2.59-GAA and .933-SPCT.

The SJHL Rookie Of The Month is 1997 G Taryn Kotchorek (North Battleford SK) of the Battlefords North Stars.  Kotchorek appears to have wrestled away the number one netminding job with the Stars and why not after he went 7-0-1-and-1 with a 2.06-GAA and .919-SPCT in November.  Those numbers include a shutout November 13th in Weyburn and a consecutive minutes streak of 109:31 without allowing a goal.  On the season, Kotchorek leads the SJHL with a 1.94-GAA.  He has a SPCT of .924 and is 9-0-1-and-2 overall.

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015

The RBC SJHL Player Of The Month for September/October is 1995 F Travis Mayan (Rimbey AB) of the Melfort Mustangs.  Mayan went on a tear after opening the season with just two goals in his first five games.  He ends October on a six game goal scoring streak and has goals in ten of his last twelve and 15-goals and 7-assists in those 12-games.  For the time period in question, Mayan scored 17-goals and 13-assists in 17-games played.  He is the SJHL scoring leader. 

The IBAS SJHL Defenseman Of The Month is 1997 D Connor Sych (North Battleford SK) of the Battlefords North Stars.  Sych, who is slated to play at St. Lawrence next Fall, has seen his offensive game blossom despite his youthfulness and he had 6-goals and 12-assists in 18-games to begin the year.  Sych had points in 13-of-18 games and enjoyed a four game stretch at the end of September where he had 8-points.  

The Sasktel SJHL Goaltender Of The Month for September/October is 1995 G Jack Burgart (Fort St James BC) of the Weyburn Red Wings.  Burgart went 10-3-and-1 with a 2.14-GAA and .933-SPCT to begin the year and helped put the Red Wings in the conversation as a league contender through the opening six weeks.  Among the highlights was a 45-save shutout in Flin Flon on October 23rd (he beat the Bombers three times overall) and he also had a five game stretch where he allowed just seven goals (October 6-23).

The SJHL Rookie Of The Month is 1996 F Coby Downs (Montclair CA USA) of The Battlefords North Stars.  Downs scored 9-goals and 11-assists in 18-games to get out of the gate on his SJHL career quick.  Downs had a four point game on September 22nd against Humboldt and also enjoyed four other multiple point nights and he leads all SJHL first year players in scoring on the year.
