Centennial Cup Tie-Breaking Procedures

REGINA, SK – The Flin Flon Bombers have one game remaining in the Round Robin of the 2026 Centennial Cup, and whether they will make the quarterfinals is right up in the air.

Given three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win, and one point for an overtime loss, the situation is still quite murky.

Here are the official Hockey Canada rules:

If three or more teams have the same number of points in the group after the completion of the preliminary round, their ranking is determined by the higher number of points in a special standing composed just from the results of their head-to-head (mutual) games. If the points are equal from this special standing, it goes to a tie-breaking criterion:

  • Goal differential in the standings between the teams involved
  • Higher number of goals scored between the teams involved
  • Goal differential from all games played in the group

The Bombers Group B is wildly tight at the time of writing, the evening of May 12, 2026:

Much could be made clearer after tomorrow’s early game between College Francais de Longueuil and the Toronto Patriots.

If one team wins in regulation, Flin Flon would then form a mini group with the loser of that game plus the Truro Bearcats, their prime-time opponent tomorrow.

They would need to finish in first or second place in the below goal-differential mini standings to move on.

IF Toronto wins in regulation…

  • Longueuil 1, Flin Flon 0
  • Flin Flon – Truro TBD
  • Truro 2, Longueuil 1

Flin Flon would need a regulation win vs Truro to create a three-way tie that would go to goal differential in the standings between the teams involved.

As things stand, the goal difference standings in this mini-group are…

Truro 1

Quebec 0

Flin Flon -1

IF Longueuil wins in regulation…

  • Toronto 7, Flin Flon 2
  • Flin Flon – Truro TBD
  • Truro 6, Toronto 1

Flin Flon would need a regulation win vs Truro to create a three-way tie that would go to goal differential in the standings between the teams involved.

As things stand, the goal difference standings in this mini-group are…

Truro 5

Toronto 0

Flin Flon -5

IF Toronto and Longueuil go to overtime…

There would be no mini group, it would simply require any kind of regulation win for the Bombers to get in. If the Bombers and Bearcats go to overtime, Truro would advance regardless of a Flin Flon win.

The Top 3 teams in Group B move on. The No. 2 seed will face the No. 3 seed in Group A, and the No. 3 seed will face the No. 2 seed in Group A in Friday’s quarterfinal.
