Centennial Cup Update: What happens now?

OAKVILLE, ON – All the Melfort Mustangs can do right now is rest, wait, and watch.

By virtue of their Group B Round Robin first-place finish, the Mustangs have earned the bye into Saturday’s semifinal. As they finished one point behind Group A winners Collingwood Blues, the Ontario Junior Hockey League champions will have the choice of either the 4:00 P.M. local or 7:30 P.M. local puck drop in their semifinal.

Friday’s quarterfinal will feature the Miramichi Timberwolves vs. the Navan Grads at 4:00 P.M. local, and the Calgary Canucks vs. the Winkler Flyers at 7:30 P.M.

Upon completion of those games, the two victors will be seeded based on their tournament thus far. Here are some potential scenarios:

  • If Navan beats Miramichi, the Mustangs will face whoever wins the other quarterfinal (Calgary or Winkler)
  • If Calgary and Miramichi both win, it would come down to goal differential in all games between those two teams and Melfort would face whichever has the higher differential.
    • Currently, Calgary is at +5 and Miramichi is +3; so, it would likely set up the semifinals of Calgary vs Melfort and Collingwood vs Miramichi barring a big Miramichi victory
