DAY 1 OF SHOWCASE COMPLETE

By Craig Stein

WINGS/BOMBERS CAP THE DAY WITH EXTRA TIME

The SJHL Showcase kicked off Sunday at the Hamm Latrace Arena in Saskatoon, and after a pair of 5-2 games opened up the day, the Flin Flon Bombers and Weyburn Red Wings skated to a much more tightly-contested affair.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Red Wings battled back with a goal in each of the final two frames, before beating the Bombers 3-2 in a shootout.

Jeremy Velazquez cut the deficit in half before Cade Kowalski eventually forced overtime.  The shootout saw both Landon Walters and Cole Woodliffe score for Weyburn, while Wings’ goalie Arik Weersink stopped both breakaways he faced.

Weersink stopped 22/24 shots through regulation in overtime, while Flin Flon’s Brenden Newton did not disappoint, turning in a 34/36 save performance.  Ben Lanfermann and Caleb Moretz gave the Bombers their early 2-0 lead.

Jordan Simoneau scored twice for the Hawks while Michael Grant, Logan Casavant and Zach Cox rounded out the scoring.  Jake Anthony made 28/30 saves as the Hawks improved to 2-1-1.

Former Hawk Sam-Jaxon Visscher stopped 32/36 shots for Humboldt, while Logan Hunter and Logan Boulet did the scoring for the Broncos.

The Battlefords North Stars’ powerplay, and Layne Young, led the charge in a 5-2 victory over Melville in the afternoon.

The Stars, who lost in overtime at home to Estevan on Saturday, went 4/7 on the powerplay Sunday, and still remain without a regulation loss, at 3-0-1.

Young continued his hot start with a goal and three assists, and has catapulted out to the early scoring lead, with 11 points (4g-7a) through just four games.

Dakota Huebner scored a pair of first period goals for Battlefords, with Matthias Urbanski and MacGregor Sinclair each chipping in their first goals of the season in the second period.

Kolby Matthews won in his first SJHL start, making 22/24 saves for the Stars.

Cory Schillo and Taylor Elmy (1g-1a) scored for the Millionaires.

The Showcase continues bright and early Monday morning as Estevan meets Battlefords at 10:00.  Weyburn meets Kindersley at 1:15, Melville battles La Ronge at 4:30, while the nightcap features Notre Dame and Flin Flon at 7:45.
