Day 2 Showcase Recap

Five games into the SJHL season, the Notre Dame Hounds are still without a regulation loss, as they finished off Day 2 of the SJHL Showcase in Saskatoon with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Flin Flon Bombers, improving to 3-0-1-1.

Hounds’ goalie Jacob Standen and Flin Flon’s Brenden Newton each made 36/37 saves.

Jack Flaman returned to the Hounds after a season and a half in the WHL, and scored the shootout winner on Monday night.

Curtis Wiebe scored for the Hounds in regulation, and Ethan Davis replied for the Bombers.

Day 2 of the Showcase opened up on Monday morning, and the Battlefords North Stars and Estevan Bruins both showed no ill effects of the early start, combining for 14 goals as the Stars outlasted the Bruins 8-6.

Layne Young scored three times and added an assist for the Stars, giving him a second straight four point game, and now 15 points (7g-8a) through his first five games.

Connor McIntosh added three assists, while MacGregor Sinclair (1g-1a), Keith Anderson (1g-1a), Brandon Armstrong, Troy Gerein and Blake Fennig rounded out the scoring for the Stars.

Zach Goberis (1g-2a), Johnny Witzke (1g-2a) and Isaac Embree (3a) all had three points for the Bruins.  Kaelan Holt (1g-1a), Mark Edmands, Michael McChesney and Raihan Kheraj also scored.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves picked up their first win of the season Monday night, edging the Melville Millionaires 2-1 in a shootout.

After a scoreless first period, and most of a second, Connor Smith opened the scoring for the Ice Wolves at 14:48 of the middle frame.  Ryan Warner tied things up for Melville early in the third and it remained that way through regulation and overtime, and a seven round shootout was needed.  Ice Wolves’ rookie Austin Bill was the only player to score.

Luke Lush made 33/34 saves for the Ice Wolves and went 7/7 in the shootout.  Melville’s Colby Entz also didn’t disappoint, making 35/36 saves, and 6/7 in the shootout.

Jordan Funk had three points (1g-2a) and Justen Close made 33/36 saves, and the Kindersley Klippers knocked off the Weyburn Red Wings 5-3.

Tanner Thompson added a goal and an assist for the Klippers, with Will Van Der Sloot and Austin Nault adding singles.

Derick Smith (1g-1a), Ben Hiltz and Jeremy Velazquez replied for the Red Wings.

There are three games at the Showcase on Tuesday.  La Ronge meets Estevan at 12:45, Humboldt battles Yorkton at 3:00, and Melfort and Notre Dame wrap up Day 3 at 5:45.
