FRIDAY RECAP: Mustangs rally late to edge North Stars

REGINA, SK – Will Munro tied the contest with under three minutes remaining in regulation, and Kaleb Binner notched the shootout winner as the Melfort Mustangs rallied to edge the Battlefords North Stars 3-2 in the skills competition on a busy Friday in the league.

Kobe Sawyer led the way for the Stars with a goal and an assist on the night.

In Humboldt, it was the Yorkton Terriers who notched their first win of the campaign with a 5-3 triumph over the Broncos. The Terriers were paced by a pair of goals from Kale Johns and 38 stops from Callum Creig, while league goals leader Jacob Strizzi notched his seventh in as many games for Humboldt.

It was a wild one in Weyburn as newly minted Red Wings captain Lucas Schmid’s three-point night was not enough to stop a marauding Melville Millionaires team, who took all the points with an 8-4 win. Mils’ captain Boston Harkness had three assists of his own, and the Moneymen had eight different goal scorers on the night.

Mason Karakochuk and Will Whitter scored a minute apart, a minute into the game, and the latter’s marker proved the winner as the Nipawin Hawks outlasted the Estevan Bruins 3-1. Rookie Cash Olson cashed in the only goal for Estevan.

Finally, the league’s last perfect team remained so, as the Flin Flon Bombers rode a three-goal third-period lead over the Warman Wolverines, and held on for a 4-2 win. Flin Flon locals Joey Lies and Wyatt Stinton both had a goal and an assist, while Kane Kennedy scored his first career SJHL goal in response for the Wolverines.
