REGINA, SK – Friday served up all sorts of notable events across the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
It took a Canadian Junior Hockey League and SJHL record 21 rounds for Finlay Klippenstein to score on his second shot of the same shootout to help the Battlefords North Stars down the Weyburn Red Wings 3-2.
Four skaters on each team shot twice in the marathon, with the two goaltenders, Nate Stevens of Weyburn and Spencer Michnik of Battlefords, stopping a remarkable 18 of the 21 shots combined.
It was Michnik’s first game as a North Star.
The record for rounds in a single shootout is held by the Swiss U20 league, when in 2018 EHC Biel downed Geneve Futur 4-3 in a 25-round skills competition.

As if the shootout element wasn’t enough, it was the fifth game in a row that the Battlefords North Stars had trailed and come back to win. Their victory moves them within a single point of the Red Wings for second place, although Weyburn has two games in hand.
It was also a historic night in Estevan.
Trailing 1-0 to the Warman Wolverines heading into the third period, the Bruins scored nine goals on 18 shots in the final frame to take the 9-1 victory.
The SJHL record for goals in a period was set in the 1966-67 season, when the Estevan Bruins scored 11 against a Calgary franchise. Estevan won the game 18-5.
The National Hockey League record for goals in a period by one team is nine, held by the 1981 Buffalo Sabres and the 2021 New York Rangers.
Bruins’ forward Lochlan Tetarenko notched his first career junior hockey hat trick in the final frame last night, while Ewan Rennie also added two goals and a helper.
In Humboldt, the Nipawin Hawks scored twice in four-and-a-half minutes late in the second period to edge the Broncos 2-1.
Sean Shiels’ marker with 31 seconds remaining in the middle frame held up as the winner, for his second game-winner of the year out of three goals total.
The Broncos had a very new-look roster after their big deal with Flin Flon the day before.
Those Bombers got a goal from the newest forward, Connor Miller, and a goal and an assist from Joey Lies, en route to a 6-3 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
The Wolves rallied twice to tie the contest, but two third-period tallies put the game on ice for the club from northwest Manitoba.
Elsewhere in Kindersley, it was Ethan Sautner’s third-period winner that proved decisive to help the Klippers outlast the Melville Millionaires 4-3.
Sautner also added two helpers in the victory.
Finally, in Yorkton, the Terriers got four-point nights from each member of their top line – Gabriel Courchesne, William Leonard, and Jye Zawatsky – and cruised past the Melfort Mustangs 8-1.
Yorkton went 3-for-6 on the power play and moved into second place in the league category at a clip of 24.2%.
With his third-period marker, Leonard became the third player in the league this year to hit the 20-goal plateau.
