FRIDAY RECAP: Wings take big step toward home-ice

REGINA, SK – Liam Fitzgerald’s power-play goal 55 seconds into the third period held up as the winner. The Weyburn Red Wings moved four points up on No. 4 Yorkton with a 3-1 victory at home over the Melville Millionaires.

The Wings also moved seven points ahead of No. 5 seed Melville and, with four games remaining, have a strong hold on home-ice advantage in Round 1.

In Wilcox, the Klippers went 3-for-5 on the power play and barely broke a sweat while moving three points up on No. 9 La Ronge for the eighth and final playoff spot with an easy 8-2 win over the Notre Dame Hounds.

Eight different scorers found the back of the net for Kindersley, who beat the Hounds in ND’s second-to-last home game. Notre Dame affiliate goaltender Steven Wawryk was magnificent despite the eight goals against, making 44 often difficult stops.

Ewan Rennie scored 3:18 into overtime on an Estevan power play as the Yorkton Terriers needed to settle for a single point after a 5-4 Bruins victory.

That point was valuable, however, as the Terriers advanced three points adrift of Melville for the final Round 1 home-ice advantage spot.

At the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon, the home Bombers took it to the Battlefords North Stars as Mike Reagan’s men pumped 71 shots on net and scored three power-play markers en route to a 5-1 win.

Justen Maric and Connor Baumbach were brilliant in the Battlefords net to keep the scoreline reasonable.

The Bombers know they will finish with the No. 2 seed post-season.

Finally, the Melfort Mustangs continued to show no ill effects of clinching first overall in the league. They staged a third-period rally and ultimately cruised past the Nipawin Hawks 5-2.
