The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) has long served as a launchpad for aspiring hockey players looking to make their mark on the game. While many alumni go on to play university or minor pro hockey in North America, a growing number are finding success in professional leagues across Europe. This past season, 35 former SJHL players suited up for clubs ranging from top-tier leagues in Germany and Sweden to emerging circuits in Central Europe and beyond.
Goaltending Talent Spreads Across the Continent
Several former SJHL netminders have taken their talents abroad. Notably, Logan Flodell (Nipawin Hawks) played for the Mechelen Golden Sharks in Belgium’s CEHL, while Taran Kozun (Nipawin Hawks) tended goal for Amiens in France’s Ligue Magnus. Tyler Szturm (Estevan Bruins) found a home in Iceland with Skautafélag Akureyrar, and Evan Weninger (Kindersley Klippers) suited up for the Manchester Storm in the UK’s EIHL.
Forwards Making a Global Impact
SJHL-developed forwards continue to leave a strong offensive mark overseas. Cole Fonstad, formerly of the Estevan Bruins, skated with Straubing in Germany’s DEL, one of Europe’s premier leagues. Riley Woods (Estevan Bruins) played in Sweden’s top-tier SHL with MoDo, while Brett Kemp (Yorkton Terriers) joined Vienna in the ICE Hockey League.
Others have brought their scoring prowess to a wide range of European clubs. Ben Duperreault (Notre Dame Hounds) suited up in the Netherlands, Brant Harris (Melfort Mustangs) played in the Czech Extraliga, and Kishaun Gervais (Yorkton Terriers) competed in Finland’s Mestis league.
Defensive Core Represented Widely
Defensemen are just as well-represented among SJHL alumni abroad. Greg Moro (Humboldt Broncos) laced up for Linz in Austria’s ICE HL, and Davis Vandane (Yorkton Terriers) played in Germany’s DEL 2 for Krefeld. Former Flin Flon blueliners Tyler Higgins and Josh Roach brought a steady presence to Switzerland and Northern Ireland, respectively.
In France, Troy Williams (Flin Flon Bombers) and Adam Nobes (Melfort Mustangs) played in the FFHG, while Curtis Roach (Flin Flon Bombers) landed in Hungary’s Erste Liga with Budapest.
Global Footprint Continues to Grow
From the French Alps to Iceland’s rinks and everything in between, SJHL alumni are embracing opportunities to extend their hockey careers and experience life abroad. Whether competing in elite leagues or helping grow the game in developing markets, these former SJHLers are proving that the league continues to produce versatile, adaptable, and high-caliber talent ready to perform on a global stage.
