Goals for KidSport Raises Over $24,000

By SJHL

(SASKATOON) — KidSport Saskatchewan, SaskEnergy, and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League teamed up in the 2018-19 season to raise $24,646 through the Goals for KidSport program.

The initiative raises funds in communities across the province to help youth access sport opportunities by reducing the financial pressure that some may face. For every home goal scored by an SJHL team (up to 1,000) during the regular season, $20 per goal is donated to Local KidSport Chapters; it is a collaboration between SaskEnergy Network Members (independent retailers and contractors), KidSport Saskatchewan and the SJHL.

“Thank you once again to the SJHL and SaskEnergy for their support of our Local KidSport Chapters in this amazing fundraising program,” said Jerry Shoemaker, Volunteer Chair, KidSport Saskatchewan. “Together, we have created opportunities for kids in the local communities to get off the sidelines and into the game. Kids that are supported through KidSport learn and experience life lessons such as hard work, teamwork and leadership. Sport will help prepare them for the future.”

The 1,000th home goal of the season was scored on Feb. 10 by the Nipawin Hawks’ Colten Gerlib. At the time, the Melfort Mustangs had a league-leading 104 home goals, making them the 2019 KidSport Cup champions. The cup was presented at the final home game of the season.

“The league is extremely proud to partner with SaskEnergy Network Members in raising funds and awareness for KidSport!” said Bill Chow, President of the SJHL.  “This is another way our league gives back to the communities where we play.”

At 11 sponsored game nights during the SJHL season, SaskEnergy Network Members and Local KidSport Chapters held additional fundraisers, including additional dollars added for home goals, raffles and chuck-a-puck promotions, which added $4,646 to the total.

“SaskEnergy Network Members have been great supporters of the Goals for KidSport initiative in every SJHL community,” says Leslie Gosselin, Manager, Community Relations, SaskEnergy.  “This year’s results tops off over $1.3 million raised for KidSport in the last 20 years through SaskEnergy community endeavours, making it possible for over 8,000 youth to participate in sport.”

In five seasons of Goals for KidSport, more than $130,000 has been raised So ALL Kids Can Play!
