The Melfort Mustangs are pleased to announce that 1998 D Tyler Heidt (Saskatoon SK) has committed to the University of Alaska Anchorage for September 2018.
Heidt has developed quickly as he was brought through the minor hockey system as a forward and only moved to the blueline in his last year of Midget AAA. In fact, the Mustangs also tried him at forward early last season before realizing his incredible potential as a defenseman.
Heidt, named to the SJHL All-Rookie Team after scoring 7-goals and 14-assists in 54-games, will play this upcoming season with Melfort once again and will leave after his 19-year-old year.
“His hard work and dedication paid off. Tyler has shown great character and grit in a season where we were a rebuilding team. He came to us with minimal experience on defense; but it became obvious to us very quickly that he can play in all situations and succeed,” said Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins.
“Tyler is very coachable and his development is evident. The sky is the limit for Tyler and Anchorage Alaska has gained the commitment of a quality player. We are happy to have him back with us in Melfort for the upcoming season.”
When Heidt joins Anchorage Alaska, he will be on the same team as former Mustang Eric Sinclair, who is headed there this Fall after superb Junior A campaigns with the Mustangs and Flin Flon Bombers that saw him win back to back SJHL Defenseman Of The Year awards.
