McDougall’s Late Heroics Sends Hawks To Semis

By Craig Stein

Goaltenders’ Duel Ends In Dying Seconds Of Overtime

Double overtime looked like a sure bet, until Nipawin Hawks’ defenseman Josh McDougall scored a powerplay goal with 0.1 seconds left in overtime, breaking a scoreless tie, giving the Hawks a 1-0 (OT) victory, and a berth in the SJHL Semi-Finals, eliminating the Flin Flon Bombers in five games in their Quarter-Final.

Shots on goal were 54-33 in favour of the Hawks, as Bomber 20-year-old goaltender Brenden Newton made 53 saves in his final SJHL game, a magnificent performance.  Declan Hobbs earned the 33-save shutout at the other end.

Hobbs was 4-1, 1.32 GAA, .958%, 1 SO in the five game series.

Nipawin could find out their semi-final opponent as early as Saturday when Humboldt visits Melfort for Game 5.  Humboldt leads the series 3-1, and if they can close out the series, it would be Broncos-Hawks in the Semis, and Battlefords-Estevan in the other.  Should Melfort storm back and win three in a row, the Nipawin would meet Estevan, while Battlefords would get Melfort.
