CALGARY, AB – The Melfort Mustangs now know their playoff fate.
By taking at least a point from their 5-4 overtime victory Wednesday over the Quebec champion Valleyfield Braves, the SJHL champs will finish second in Group B and take on the Greater Sudbury Cubs in one of Friday’s two quarterfinals.
Brayden Westerlund was the hero of the night when he poked home a loose puck after a lovely move by Ashton Paul created the play with just 36 seconds remaining in overtime.
The Mustangs had to kill a five-minute major late in the third period just to get to overtime after Valleyfield had tied the contest shorthanded at the 3:57 mark of the final frame.
Danton Cox, Cole Unger, Logan Belton, and Bo Eisner had the other Melfort goals.
Head coach and GM Trevor Blevins was named the CJHL Coach of the Year hours before the game, and the club found their way to dig deep once again after letting 3-0 and 4-3 leads slip.
The Mustangs quarterfinal time will be determined after the late game Wednesday.
