MUSTANGS MAKE IT LUCKY SEVEN

By Craig Stein

The Melfort Mustangs needed a shootout to extend their season opening winning streak to seven games, with a 3-2 (SO) decision over the Nipawin Hawks.

The shootout lasted just two rounds, as Justin Ball and Colin Schmidt both scored and Evan Plotnik stopped each of the first two Hawks’ shooters he faced.  Plotnik has still played every minute of action for the Mustangs so far this season, running his own record to a perfect 7-0, to go with a 1.69 GAA and .938%.  He made 34/36 saves through regulation and overtime Friday.

Loch Morrison and Taylor Schmidt scored second period goals for the Mustangs, while Jake Anthony made 23/25 saves for the Hawks and Bryson Cecconi and Michael Grant (7th of the season) did their scoring.

The Melville Millionaires kicked off a three game northern road trip Friday in Flin Flon, and stormed out to a 2-0 lead after the first period.

However that was it for their offense, as the Bombers included four of their own in the third period on their way to a 5-2 win.

Caleb Moretz (1g-1a), Ethan Daniels, Chrystopher Collin, Daylan Marchi and Dawson McKenzie scored for Flin Flon and Brenden Newton made 20/22 saves.

Colby Entz was busy, turning away 35/39 shots for the Millionaires, while Peter Michailides and Ethan Kopycyzn got Melville on the board early.  The teams square off again Saturday at the Whitney Forum, before the Millionaires conclude their trip Sunday afternoon in La Ronge.

The Estevan Bruins extended their early lead in the Viterra Division, defeating the visiting Yorkton Terriers 8-1.

Kaelan Holt led the charge with a goal and three assists while Jake Fletcher scored twice and set up another.  Zach Goberis (1g-1a), Nolan Ferguson (1g-1a), Michael McChesney (1g-1a), Andrew Warhoftig (1g-1a) and Tanner McKechnie all chipped in with goals.  Matt Lukacs made 33/34 saves.

The Terriers have struggled to score in the early going of the season, putting up seven goals in as many games.  Chantz Petruic got them on the board late in the third.

Yorkton will host Estevan on Saturday.
