The Estevan Bruins pulled the trigger on a blockbuster deal on Wednesday, acquiring defenceman Tylor Ludwar ('99) from the AJHL's Okotoks Oilers in exchange for forward Tristyn Deroose ('99).
The Regina-born blueliner joins the Bruins after splitting the last two-and-a-half seasons between the WHL's Kamloops Blazers and the AJHL's Okotoks Oilers. After joining the Oilers midway through the 18-19 season, Ludwar tallied 9 points (1G, 8A) in 27 games and then added 3 points (1G, 2A) in 13 playoff games for Okotoks.
Before his junior career, Ludwar played Midget AAA for the Regina Pat Canadians and was on the 2014-15 Telus Cup Bronze Medal squad that included now-former Bruins: Arthur Miller, Jake Tesarowski, Jake Heerspink, Bryce Platt, Mark Edmands, and Matthew Chekay.
Ludwar will add experience to the Bruins blueline for the 2019-20 season after losing defenceman Johnny Witzke, Jake Heerspink and Aigne McGeady-Bruce to graduation.
Going the other way in the deal is forward Tristyn Deroose. Deroose played the 2018-19 season with the Estevan Bruins, tallying 25 points (7G, 18A) in 45 regular season games. However, the power winger from Ceylon, SK will be fondly remembered for years to come in Estevan thanks to his heroics in the Bruins 2019 SJHL quarterfinal round series against the Humboldt Broncos.
Deroose was a central figure in the Bruins come-from-behind series victory against Humboldt. Trailing the series 3-1 going into Game 5, Deroose drew the primary assist on Tanner Manz's double-OT winner in Estevan to keep the series alive. After the Bruins won Game 6 in Humboldt, the storybook ending was completed in Game 7 back in Estevan as Deroose scored the overtime series-clinching winner in front of a sold out crowd at Affinity Place advancing the Bruins to the semi-final round.
The Bruins wish to thank Tristyn for his positive contributions to the team and the community of Estevan during his time with the club, and wish him good luck in his final junior season with Okotoks.
