SGEU MVP of the Week: Madden Mulawka, Melfort Mustangs
The Mustangs got right back in the saddle after a tough loss to start February, and four wins from four games in five days, all with young Mulawka in net, were more than impressive—no wrong answer between Mulawka and Kristian Coombs when Coach Trevor Blevins picks the goaltender each night.
Weekly Stats: 4 starts, 4-0-0-0, .952 SV%, 0.98 GAA
Bourgault Forward of the Week: Jaron Desnoyers, Yorkton Terriers
Adversity has struck the Terriers again, but Captain Desnoyers’ consistency and steadfastness when he’s been healthy has been remarkable all year. A monster February has Jaron second in league scoring at the time of writing, and with the recent departures, he will be relied on even more to keep producing.
Weekly Stats: 3 GP, 3 G, 3 A, 6 PTS
SuperU Defenceman of the Week: Thomas Ries, Yorkton Terriers
There are many good young players in the SJHL, but it is an excellent argument that nobody relies on a single rookie more than the Terriers do Ries. The shot-blocking, physical machine keeps producing offensively and thrives as a net-front or wing option on the power play. As an 18-year-old No. 1 defenceman, he averages around 21 minutes a night. That’s impressive.
Weekly Stats: 3 GP, 2 G, 2 A, 4 PTS
Sasktel Goalie of the Week: Cody Jaman, Kindersley Klippers
No matter what is or isn’t going right in Noodles Jaman’s career, he always brings it at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt. Saturday’s 42-save shutout was the fourth of Jaman’s SJHL tenure and much-needed for the Klips.
Weekly Stats: 1 start, 1-0-0-0, 1.000 SV%, 0.00 GAA, 1 SO
IKS Media Rookie of the Week: Brady Holtvogt, Humboldt Broncos
With Dazza Mitchell in town, the young local Holtvogt has had to bide his time, but there is no doubt, whenever he has been called upon, he has more than answered the bell. Wednesday’s performance at home vs. Estevan was rock solid, and Brady’s future is very bright.
Weekly Stats: 1 start, 1-0-0-0, .966 SV%, 1.00 GAA
Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Week: Zac Somers, Melfort Mustangs (from Melfort, Sask)
Somers was a big part of Melfort’s eight-point week, with two two-point outings and two power-play goals. His big left-shot one-timer from the right wing is a significant part of the Mustangs’ man advantage, and overall, this is the best version of the University of Maine commit we’ve ever seen.
Weekly Stats: 2 GP, 2 G, 2 A, 4 PTS
