PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (March 18)

CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Carson Albrecht, Melfort Mustangs
1998 F Carson Albrecht (Martensville SK) lit the lamp four times in the first two games of Melfort’s quarter-final series with Kindersley, helping the Mustangs stake themselves to a 2-0 series lead in the best of seven as the scene shifts to Kindersley this week.  Albrecht scored both of his team’s goals in game one, including the winner with 2:12 remaining. He had two more in a 5-2 win on Saturday. Runner-up: Cody Bruchkowski, Yorkton.

SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK:  Jake Heerspink, Estevan Bruins
1998 D Jake Heerspink (Regina SK) helped the Bruins earn a split in their quarter-final series with Humboldt over the weekend by scoring the game winning goal midway through the third period of game two.  The veteran Bruins blueliner was part of a unit that held Humboldt to 25 shots in game one despite coming up on the wrong end of the decision. The series shifts to Humboldt for game three on Monday evening.  Runner-up: Charles Martin, Notre Dame.

SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK:  Joel Grzybowski, Battlefords North Stars
1999 G Joel Grzybowski (Hafford SK) stopped 79 of 80 shots in the first two games of the North Stars-Bombers series as Battlefords has surged ahead 2-0 in the best of seven quarterfinal.  Grzybowski made 37 saves in a 3-0 shutout in game one and then was sensational in game two as well, turning away 42-shots in a 2-1 overtime victory. Runner-up: Noah Giesbrecht, Melfort.

DIRECTWEST SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:  Kaden Boser, Battlefords North Stars
2000 F Kaden Boser (Saskatoon SK) has two game winning goals in the first two games of the North Stars’ series with the Flin Flon Bombers.  Boser scored late in the first period of game one in what ended up being a 3-0 decision. He then followed that up with the overtime winner in game two, scoring at 11:01 of the extra period giving the Stars a two game cusion as the series shifts to the Whitney Forum.  Runner-up: Michael Makarenko, Nipawin.
