SGEU MVP of the Week: Justen Maric, Battlefords North Stars
The Weyburn Red Wings had been running a 14-game unbeaten streak, that is, until they ran into Maric and the North Stars. Maric was often spectacular this past weekend as the Stars swept the Wings in Weyburn, and Battlefords has rarely had setbacks since his return from the WHL.
Weekly Stats: 2 starts, Two wins, 2-0-0-0, 3.00 GAA, .931 SV%
Bourgault Forward of the Week: Cole Thomas, La Ronge Ice Wolves
Thomas is an early (and maybe runaway) candidate for SJHL’s Most Improved Player. On top of potentially being the league’s best face-off guy and penalty killer, he has contributed regularly in the points department. He was instrumental in the Wolves’ weekend sweep at home vs. the Estevan Bruins.
Weekly Stats: 2 GP, 1 G, 4 A, 5 PTS
SuperU Defenceman of the Week: Rylan Silzer, La Ronge Ice Wolves
There is no cheating in Silzer’s game, so when the big blue liner puts up points, it’s out of doing things the right way. The Wolves captain helped the club to two more wins, and don’t look now, but La Ronge sits in fifth in the SJHL at the time of this writing.
Weekly Stats: 2 GP, 1 G, 2 A, 3 PTS
Sasktel Goalie of the Week: Matthew Kieper, Flin Flon Bombers
Between Kieper, veteran Kenny Marquart, and talented youngster Massimo Urbani, the Bombers have more than figured out their goaltending situation. The WHL-veteran Kieper was excellent in Flin Flon’s two-game road sweep over the Kindersley Klippers.
Weekly Stats: 2 starts, Two wins, 2-0-0-0, 1.92 GAA, .946 SV%
IKS Media Rookie of the Week: Gage Roberts, Nipawin Hawks
Road games this weekend at local rivals Melfort and Humboldt looked like lemons for the young Hawks, but Roberts and the club turned it into lemonade big-time! A well-earned point at the home of the champions was followed by a brilliant 36-save, 1-0 shutout over the Broncos at the Elgar Petersen Arena. It was also Roberts’ young career’s first win and goose egg.
Weekly Stats: 1 start, one win, 1-0-0-0, 0.00 GAA, 1.00 SV%,
Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Week: Mason Bueckert, La Ronge Ice Wolves (from Saskatoon, Sask)
The roles in La Ronge seem to be settling in nicely, and Mr. Bueckert’s is very clearly to put the puck in the net. The veteran has caught fire lately after a bit of a slower start, scoring seven of his nine goals on the year since Oct. 26, a span of nine games.
Weekly Stats: 2 GP, 2 G, 2 A, 4 PTS
