SGEU MVP of the Week: Jake Southgate, Battlefords North Stars

The Battlefords North Stars are 10-0-0-0 to start the 22/23 SJHL season and they are led up front by Captain Jake Southgate. The Battlefords product was named Captain of his hometown team in the summer and he has been off to a hot start this season. This past week in 3 games, the 20-year-old had a goal and 5 assists in 3 wins for the Stars, which was highlighted by a 4 point night Saturday against Weyburn. This brings Southgate’s point total to 14 on the year, which is among the league leaders behind just Noah Wills and Kade Runke.

Sasktel Goalie of the Week: Cam Hrdlicka, Estevan Bruins

After a slow start to the season, the Estevan Bruins have turned it around and a big reason why is Cam Hrdlicka. The 19-year-old has been one of the busiest goalies in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, appearing in 11 of the 12 Bruins games and this past week he led the black and gold to three wins. The Calgary product allowed just 2 goals in all 3 of the games the Bruins played, and made 100 saves combined in the 3 contests which helped the Bruins improve their winning streak to five games and improving their record to 6-6-0-0 on the season.

Direct West Rookie of the Week: Reid Lalonde, Nipawin Hawks

Another goalie which had a great week was Reid Lalonde of the Nipawin Hawks. The team played 3 games in 3 nights and Lalonde started the first two games against Notre Dame and Weyburn. The 18-year-old made 28 stops in a 5-2 win Wednesday over the Hounds and followed it up with a 25 stop performance Thursday in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Wings. The Edmonton product is 2-3-0-1 on the year with a 2.65 GAA and a .916 SV% so far this season.

Defenceman of the Week: Alex Blanchard, Estevan Bruins

While the Estevan Bruins have struggled to find the back of the net up front early on this SJHL season, their blue line has contributed immensely. This past week Alex Blanchard led the way with 2 goals and 2 assists from the back end in 3 games, including a goal and an assist in the Bruins 3-2 overtime win over the Melfort Mustangs Saturday night. The 20-year-old now has 3 goals and 6 assists in 12 games this season and is tied for 3rd in scoring among defenceman.
