SGEU MVP of the Week: Jacob Strizzi, Humboldt Broncos
The Vaughan, ON native has been red hot since the beginning of the pre-season, and if you include the 11 regular-season and two pre-season games, he already has three hat-tricks on the campaign. His latest one, Friday in a losing cause in Battlefords, was spectacular, and out of those 13 games to date, he has not found the back of the net in only two. Kudos to a young man who was frustrated in last year’s playoffs and has come back the right way this year.
Weekly Stats: 3 GP – 5G, 1A – 6 PTS
Bourgault Forward of the Week: Zayden Sadlemyer, Melfort Mustangs
The Mustangs captain was part of a crew expected to replace some serious firepower from last year’s championship. His three points in Weyburn on Friday, a place where not many people score big, show his calibre this year. Presently combined on a line with Danton Cox and Kaleb Binner, it’s a trio with serious Centennial Cup and deep SJHL playoff experience.
Weekly Stats: 2 GP – 2G, 3A – 5 PTS
SuperU Defenceman of the Week: Boston Harkness, Melville Millionaires
Harkness is already only 13 points away from his breakout, career-high season total from a year ago in 45 fewer games, and has been immense in all three zones for the Mils so far. He’s on a run of three multi-point outings in a row, while taking care of his own end, and it would be a considerable challenge to find a tighter lock for the SJHL’s Viking Cup roster than Melville’s captain.
Weekly Stats: 3 GP – 1G, 5A – 6 PTS
SaskTel Goalie of the Week: Charlie Tritt, Humboldt Broncos
Tritt leads the league in goalie wins, save percentage, and goals-against-average among starters, and was once again great in blanking the Battlefords North Stars Saturday. Only four men had three shutouts in the league all season last year; he already has three in only eight appearances. Humboldt has serious championship aspirations, and Tritt is smack dab in the middle of them.
Weekly Stats: 2-0-0-0, 74 saves, 1.50 GAA, .961 SV%, 1 SO
SaskMilk Rookie of the Week: Noah Sinagowitz, Melville Millionaires
It has been a bit of a journey for the Millionaires to find their No. 1 goaltender so far this year, and while it might still be a work in progress, given they have iced three rookies in the sticks already this campaign, Sinagowitz made a great case this past weekend. Wins over Flin Flon and Yorkton will endear him to fans, and his puck tracking and skating ability have already been shown to be elite in this league.
Weekly Stats: 2-0-0-0, 73 saves, 2.50 GAA, .936 SV%
Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Week: Konnor Watson, Nipawin Hawks (from Spiritwood, Sask)
Watson is one of two SJHLers at a goal-per-game clip so far (with Strizzi), and while the goals have not flown in as easily as some might have predicted for the high-flying Hawks so far, they certainly have for the hulking Watson. Five of his seven goals this year have been on the power play, which is a big reason why, at the time of writing, Nipawin’s man-advantage is a full five percentage points better than anyone else’s in the SJHL. All three of his hat-trick goals on Friday in Warman were on the PP.
Weekly Stats: 2 GP – 4G, 0A – 4 PTS
