SJHL Power Rankings – Week 2 (Sept. 30, 2025)

The first weekend of the SJHL season is in the books, and while it’s far too early to draw sweeping conclusions, some teams wasted no time making a statement. Others are still finding their footing. Here’s how things stack up after opening week:

1. Flin Flon Bombers (Last week 1)

What’s more impressive? 80 shots on goal in two games this past week, three games in a row with one goal against in each, or a perfect 4-0 record on the year so far? It’s a matter of debate, but whichever you decide, it’s a happy start up in northwest Manitoba.

2. Humboldt Broncos (Last week 4)

Listed as the nation’s No. 2 team this past week, the Broncos went 2-1 in a challenging three games in four days this past weekend. Humboldt and Kindersley are supposed to be two of the top teams in the league, so if Monday’s tilt at the Inter Pipeline Events Centre is any indication, it’s going to be a fun rivalry all year long.

3. Weyburn Red Wings (Last week 3)

Cody Mapes’ men responded from a tough defeat in Humboldt Tuesday the right way, with two wins over their Highway 39 rival Estevan Bruins this past weekend. When they are playing their game, they are as good as anyone, but even they would agree they let the foot off the pedal at times in both games, though the Bruins deserve tons of credit for never quitting. Lots of time to learn to play 60 minutes.

4. Melfort Mustangs (Last week 7)

The Mustangs did what they needed to in two games against La Ronge this past week, then were edged in the shootout at the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon in what was probably the best game of the year so far on Saturday. Kason Kobelka proved he is a legitimate option in net whenever Madden Mulawka needs to miss time.

5. Kindersley Klippers (Last week 5)

Kindersley had a three-games-in-four-days weekend as well, splitting with the Warman Wolverines before earning a statement, come-from-behind win Monday evening at home to the Humboldt Broncos. September was one of ups and downs for the Klippers, but when they’re going, they certainly have the horses to be a problem for anyone.

6. Nipawin Hawks (Last week 6)

September was not very busy for the Hawks, so there isn’t a lot to judge them on just yet. A loss at home to the juggernaut Flin Flon Bombers was followed this past weekend by a needed win in La Ronge. This team has a lot of talent, but it’s been challenging to get a sense of them as a group so far.

7. Battlefords North Stars (Last week 9)

If Nipawin’s sample size is small, Battlefords’ is even smaller. Their last game, and their final game of September, took place last Tuesday at home against Warman, where both teams had plenty of chances, but the Stars showed they could be clinical. Gavin Granger is the way-too-early candidate for Defenceman of the Year, and has been terrific.

8. Melville Millionaires (Last week 6)

Sure, the Mils have lost three in a row, but they could have easily won all three as well. Job 1 is likely to determine who will start in net, as Melville has already used three goaltenders in four games. It’s way too early to be worried. Doug Johnson knows what he’s doing at the helm, and the recent addition of Kale Margolis from the WHL should help as well.

9. Yorkton Terriers (Last week 8)

The Terriers have played the fewest number of games so far this year, and after a tough opening weekend vs. Weyburn, you know Emery Olauson’s men are raring to get into games. It will be 10 days between games when they do battle in Estevan against the Bruins Tuesday evening, and early October will really show what this group is made of. Gabrielle Courschesne is the real deal in the early going.

10. Warman Wolverines (Last week 11)

The league’s newest team has probably had the hardest luck so far of any team. With shots per game in the middle of the pack in the league, this team is preventing scoring chances well, but having a hard time converting on their own. The addition of Taye Timmerman in net with Griffin Wright should pay off sooner rather than later, better than it did this past weekend. That all said, congratulations to the Wolverines on their first-ever victory Friday night in Kindersley!

11. Estevan Bruins (Last week 10)

This Bruins club certainly has some impressive veteran talent up front; they need to learn to start on time. In both games this past weekend against Weyburn, they fell behind early but managed to claw back impressively. They ultimately dug themselves too big a hole each time, but there are plenty of positives for Drew Kocur’s men to build off.

12. La Ronge Ice Wolves (Last week 12)

La Ronge joins Warman as a hard-luck club, and despite a few outstanding performances this past weekend, they just could not overcome the far more veteran Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks. Kevin Kaminski and his men deserve a ton of credit for being in every single game they’ve had so far.
