Schedule Resumes After Holiday Break

By Craig Stein

The SJHL schedule is back in action after the Christmas Break, at least as much as Mother Nature will allow.  The Kindersley Klippers and Battlefords North Stars postponed their entire Friday/Saturday home and home set due to the cold temperatures, with makeup dates coming early in the New Year.

The other New Years weekend rivalry home and homes did kick off on Saturday night, and all ended with fairly lopsided scores.

The Melville Millionaires scored three powerplay goals on five opportunities, en route to a 5-1 win over the visiting Yorkton Terriers.

Dayton Heino led the way with a hat trick, and Damian Bentz picked up three assists.  Issac Embree added a goal and an assist, while Shane Sherban also scored and Colby Entz made 23/24 saves for the Millionaires (13-21-0-2).

Chantz Petruic scored for the Terriers (7-24-2-1), who host the rematch on New Years Day.

The Flin Flon Bombers also picked up a home ice win on Saturday, getting by the La Ronge Ice Wolves 4-1.

Brenden Newton picked up the win, stopping 28 of the 29 shots he faced in goal for the Bombers (11-18-1-3).  Nick Shumlanski and Jordan Funk each had a goal and an assist, with Rob Johnson and Caleb Moretz picked up the other goals.

Mitch Zambon scored and Merek Pipes made 44 saves for the Ice Wolves (7-24-0-2).  Those two clubs go right back at it with a 6:00 start New Years Eve.

The only road team to win on Saturday were the Estevan Bruins, who walked into Weyburn and left with a 5-1 win.

The Bruins (22-12-2-1) stretched their lead over Weyburn to four points at the top of the Viterra Division.

Jayden Davis (1g-1a), Tanner Manz (1g-1a), Aigne McGeady-Bruce, Kaelan Holt and Arthur Miller all scored for Estevan.  Bo Didur made 22/23 saves in the win.

Ben Hiltz notched his 17th goal of the season for the Red Wings (19-13-3-0).  Estevan hosts the rematch New Year’s Day at 3:00.
