The SJHL Showcase opened up at the Legends Centre in Warman with a pair of games Sunday.

In the matinee, Carson Albrecht scored his first two goals of the season to lead the Melfort Mustangs (2-2-1-0) over the Kindersley Klippers 5-3. Justin Ball added three assists while Tanner Zentner and Nolan Kadachuk each had a goal and an assist, and Dryden Michaud added his first of the season in his first game. Michaud spent parts of two seasons in the WHL. Hunter Arps made 33/36 saves to pick up the win.

The Klippers lost for the first time this season (3-1-0-0) and were led by two goals from Devon Cyr and one from Will Van der Sloot.

In the night game, Jake Davidson made his first start in goal this season, stopping 36/39 shots as the Battlefords North Stars were outshot 39-25 but beat the La Ronge Ice Wolves 6-3.

Owen Lamb scored twice and Elijah Loon-Stewardson chipped in a goal and an assist. Matthias Urbanski, Austin Becker and Braydon Buziak rounded out the scoring for the North Stars (2-3-0-0).

That was the first action for the Ice Wolves since opening weekend and they remain the league’s only club searching for their first win (0-3-0-0). Mitch Zambon (1g-1a), Kolby Johnson and Ethan King did their scoring on Sunday.

The first full day of the Showcase kicks off early Tuesday when Yorkton (1-2-0-0) battles unbeaten Nipawin (4-0-0-0) at 10:00 AM.
