SJHL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

By Mike Stackhouse

SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Humboldt Broncos (entire team)
1997 D Logan Boulet (Lethbridge AB) led his club with six assists despite not playing a single on-ice game this past week as the Broncos sparked an entire country to unify in the aftermath of the tragic accident on April 6, 2018.

News of Boulet’s organ donations has also resulted in an unprecedented number of requests for donor stickers.

1999 D Ryan Straschnitzki (Airdrie AB) was the inspirational leader this past week, setting an example for people far beyond the hockey world when it comes to internal strength and determination.

Meanwhile, the efforts of these two young men (and others) would not be possible without the influence of their coaches, Darcy Haugan, Mark Cross, and Chris Beaudry.

In addition, captain 1997 F Logan Schatz (Allan SK) and veteran forward 1997 F Conner Lukan (Slave Lake AB) were a pair of players that set the standard as far as the display of leadership, love, and commitment that was viewed by the world this past week.

Forwards 1997 F Nick Shumlanski (Tisdale SK), 1998 F Brayden Camrud (Saskatoon SK), and 1997 F Matthieu Gomercic (Winnipeg MB) were the catalysts in the area of optimism.

In addition to Straschnitzki, 2000 G Jacob Wassermann (Humboldt SK), 1997 D Bryce Fiske (La Ronge SK), 1999 D Morgan Gobeil (Humboldt SK), 1999 D Xavier Labelle (Saskatoon SK), and 2000 D Layne Matechuk (Colonsay SK) are joined up front by 1999 F Graysen Cameron (Olds AB), 1997 F Kaleb Dahlgren (Saskatoon SK), 2000 F Mitchell Girolami (Humboldt SK), 1998 F Derek Patter (Edmonton AB), and 1998 F Tyler Smith (Leduc AB) in what has become an overwhelming and unstoppable force in the category of perseverance.

First year 2001 D Adam Herold (Montmartre SK) gets the nod for Rookie Of The Week due to his unprecedented impact as a first year player despite the limited time he had to make this contribution.  1999 F Logan Hunter (St. Albert SK) could have won this week as well, but because he was been honored already this season, he wanted to ensure Herold got his due.

1999 G Parker Tobin (Stony Plain AB) won the Goalie Of The Week as recently as two weeks ago and has requested to share the nod with the rest of his teammates this week as his year long high end performance would not be possible without top notch team work.

Trainer Dayna Brons (Lake Lenore SK) is included this week as her attention to detail with regards to fitness was crucial and underrated, which is often the case for hockey team support staff, but her mark in that area will be left with players forever.

On the subject of underrated, Glen Doerksen’s (Tisdale SK) role as travel captain cannot be overstated and he left a mark this past week that figures to illuminate the importance of others in his craft and it’s expected this position will, no longer, be one that flies under the radar on any club at any level.

All of these facts aren’t assembled without the great work of Brody Hinz (Humboldt SK) keeping them properly organized nor would we have known as much about this team if it were not for radio man Tyler Bieber (Humboldt SK) spreading the good news over the airwaves.

1997 D Stephen Wack (St. Albert AB), 1997 F Jaxon Joseph (Edmonton AB), 1999 F Jacob Leicht (Humboldt SK), and 1999 F Evan Thomas (Saskatoon SK) have requested that they not receive t-shirts to recognize this week’s Player Of The Week achievement, but rather they’d appreciate it if fans bought some of their own through 22Fresh and made a donation to the SJHL Player Assistance Fund.

This has been an extraordinary week.  As remarkable as the displays have been from all involved, we hope to never ever see a repeat performance and fans are, simply, asked to keep memories of everyone forever instead.
