SJHL playoff race tight as regular season nears finish line

REGINA, SK – With the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League regular season entering its final stretch, the race for playoff positioning — and the final berth — is coming down to the final few games of the 56-game schedule. While several teams have already secured their place in the postseason, the battle around the playoff line remains extremely tight with only a handful of games left for most clubs.

At the top of the standings, the Flin Flon Bombers remain in control of the league lead with 77 points through 51 games. The Bombers have already clinched first place overall and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs thanks to their dominant season, highlighted by a league-best defensive record with just 128 goals against.

The Yorkton Terriers sit second with 72 points and are also locked into the postseason. Yorkton continues to lead the SJHL in goals scored with 223 and remains one of the league’s most dangerous offensive teams down the stretch. Just behind them, the Battlefords North Stars hold third place with 71 points and remain in the hunt to finish as high as second depending on how the final few games unfold.

The race for home ice in the opening round is still very much alive. The Nipawin Hawks and Weyburn Red Wings are currently tied at 66 points, occupying fourth and fifth place respectively. Both teams have four games remaining, and every point could prove crucial in determining who will host in the opening round of the SJHL Playoffs.

One of the hottest teams in the league over the final month has been the Melfort Mustangs. With a 3–1 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Tuesday, Melfort extended its remarkable winning streak to 12 consecutive games. The Mustangs have surged to 60 points and sixth place in the standings, creating valuable separation from the teams chasing the final playoff spots. During the streak, Melfort has tightened defensively and limited opponents to two goals or fewer in the majority of those games.

Behind them, the race for the seventh and eighth playoff positions remains wide open. The Melville Millionaires moved into seventh place with 55 points following a 4–0 victory over the Warman Wolverines on Tuesday night. Melville controlled the game from start to finish, outshooting Warman 40–21 while goaltender Alex Spencer-Dahl turned aside all 21 shots he faced for the shutout. With five games remaining, the Millionaires have put themselves in position to control their own destiny.

Right behind them are the Estevan Bruins with 54 points. The Bruins also have five games left to play and remain firmly in the hunt for the final playoff berth. The schedule, however, sets up several critical head-to-head matchups between the two teams, including two games between Melville and Estevan that could ultimately decide which club secures a postseason spot.

The Bruins’ remaining schedule also features games against some of the league’s top teams, including matchups with Weyburn and Yorkton, meaning they will need strong performances down the stretch to climb back above the playoff line.

Just outside the playoff picture, the Kindersley Klippers remain mathematically alive with 51 points, though their margin for error is extremely small with only three games remaining in their season. Two of those games come against the Battlefords North Stars, providing Kindersley an opportunity to gain ground but also presenting a difficult challenge against one of the league’s top teams.

The Humboldt Broncos are also still within striking distance with 49 points and five games left on their schedule. Humboldt’s remaining games include two matchups against the La Ronge Ice Wolves and two against the Warman Wolverines, offering an opportunity to gain points against teams near the bottom of the standings while still hoping for help elsewhere in the race.

While Warman and La Ronge have been eliminated from playoff contention, both teams still have multiple games remaining and could play an important spoiler role in the final days of the regular season. Each point available in those matchups could impact which team ultimately claims the final playoff spot.

With most teams having between three and five games left in the 56-game schedule, the SJHL playoff picture remains far from settled. Key head-to-head matchups, the race for home ice in the middle of the standings, and the tight battle around the eighth and final playoff position ensure that the final days of the regular season will carry significant importance across the league.
