HOME ICE ADVANTAGE BACK ON BATTLEFORDS’ SIDE

Braydon Buziak had another game winning goal, and an assist, leading the Battlefords North Stars to a 4-2 win in Melfort Tuesday, giving the Stars a 2-1 lead in the Best-of-Seven SJHL Canalta Cup Final.

Tyson Meyers got the Mustangs on the board first in the opening period, but Stars rookie Austin Becker evened things up before the first frame was over.

Regan Doig gave the Stars their first lead with his first post-season marker 8:48 into the second period, and this time the Mustangs answered, as regular season goals and points leader Justin Ball ripped home his 7th goal and 18th point (leads the league), finishing the night with a goal and an assist.

Buziak’s eventual winner came with just 15 seconds left in the second period, he helped add some insurance in the third, setting up Quinton Loon-Stewardson’s 8th of the playoffs on a partial 2-on-1.

Joel Gryzbowski made a pair of highlight reel saves in the third period on Melfort’s Colin Schmidt, and stopped 28 of 30 shots on the night.  Shawn Parkinson made 21/23 saves for Melfort, making his second straight start, but left the game injured midway through the second period and didn’t return.  Noah Giesbrecht, who played Game 1, came on in relief making 6/8 saves.

The Mustangs also finished the game without top defenseman Kayle Tosh, and they’ll assess their injury situation ahead of Wednesday night’s Game 4 in Melfort.
