Stars, Hawks Cap Weekend With Wins

The Battlefords North Stars went 2-1 on a weekend roadswing, following a loss in Estevan with wins in Weyburn and Wilcox, capping it with Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Notre Dame Hounds.

The Stars (11-6-1-2) led 3-0 less than five minutes into the second period, as the Loon-Stewardson brothers, Elijah (1g-1a) and Quinton, got the first two, and Ryan Gil made it 3-0 on the powerplay.  Matthew Fletcher had a pair of assists, and Joel Gryzbowski played in all three games on the weekend, making 26/28 saves on Sunday.

Nolan Renwick and Curtis Wiebe scored third period goals for the Hounds (10-10-0-2) and Riley Kohonick stopped all 14 shots he faced in relief.

The Melville Millionaires appeared well on their way to a perfect 3-for-3 weekend, storming out to 2-0 and 4-2 first period leads in Nipawin.

However the Hawks got one back in the second period, and two more in the third to skate away with a 5-4 win in regulation.

Austen Flaman (2g-1a) and Carson Erhardt scored twice each and Jaxsen Wiebe added a goal and an assist, while Declan Hobbs came off the bench following Melville’s fourth goal, and stopped all 29 shots he faced the rest of the way for the Hawks (14-5-0-1).

Luke Spadafora had a goal and an assist for the Millionaires (5-13-2-2), while Max McPeak, Daniel Liberty and Tristan Shewchuk added the others.
