Another hometown Yorkton Terrier is taking the next step in his hockey journey.
Forward Vinay Junek has committed to the University of Wisconsin-Superior (NCAA III), where he will continue both his academic and hockey career.
Junek said the Yellowjackets stood out because of their strong hockey culture and player development.
“It’s the right school for me because of the standard of their hockey program and the development they give their players,” said Junek. “Head coach Rich is awesome, and the relationship I’ve already built with him has been great. He’s always helping his players get to the next level.”
The Yorkton product leaves the Terriers after an outstanding junior career that saw him record 35 goals and 39 assists for 74 points in 103 regular-season games.
For Junek, wearing the orange and black carried extra meaning after growing up in Yorkton and watching the Terriers from the stands.
“It was a dream come true,” he said. “I always looked up to those guys, so to be that player one day was special. This year, and the playoff run we had, is something I’ll always remember and cherish.”
Junek added that the friendships and memories created during his time with the organization will stay with him long after his playing days in Yorkton.
“My time with the Terriers was amazing. I’ll always remember the guys and the bonds we made. Playing in my hometown was special, especially skating onto the ice in the finals in front of more than 2,000 fans.”
As he prepares to make the transition from junior hockey to the collegiate level, Junek knows balancing athletics and academics will be his next challenge.
“My time management will have to be good to balance both school and hockey,” said Junek. “There’s also the independence that comes with living on your own and having that freedom. I think it’ll be a great opportunity for me to grow as both a player and a person.”
