Good deeds generally never go unnoticed and on Saturday the Weyburn Red Wings, along with SaskEnergy, acknowledged the tireless work of three of its long-time volunteers when Curtis and Helen Stepp and George Kerr were named as Volunteer Champions.

The trio has been involved with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League franchise for more than a decade and for the past half dozen years the Stepps have also been fixtures behind the scenes with the league itself.

“I’ve always been a fan of the Red Wings,” says Curtis Stepp. “It goes back to the 1980s when I started to go to the games. Then in 2005, when Weyburn hosted the Royal Bank Cup, I got involved as a volunteer.”

“When Bill (league president Bill Chow) came to the league I was talking to him and said if there was anything I could do let me know and it kind of took off from there,” added Curtis.

Both Curtis and Helen are computer savvy so having their expertise in that field has been beneficial to both the Red Wings and the SJHL. For the team, the duo is responsible for on-line stats updates with Curtis also doing a lot of the technical work associated with the in-house video system and online video transmissions. For the league, the website is maintained and monitored by the pair and since they became involved it has grown to be a valuable tool for communications purposes.

“It really is nice to be thanked for your efforts and to be recognized for everything that you do, but my wife and I do this because we enjoy it and love our hockey team,” noted Curtis.

The presentation honouring the Stepps and Kerr, who was saluted for his work providing security for visiting teams, was in conjunction with a SaskEnergy Kids Sport event that saw the Weyburn chapter of Kids Sport receive more than $2,500 from a league-wide initiative held to raise funds to help those in need.

Congratulations Curtis, Helen and George and thanks for all that you do for the Red Wings and the SJHL.
