The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins have announced their leadership group for the 2025-26 season.
Second-year Bruin and community staple, Rorey Elson has been named team captain, while Rylan Williams, Ewan Rennie and Ethan Andrews will don the A’s as alternate (or assistant) captains, with all four taking on their leadership roles as voted on by their teammates.
Head Coach and GM, Drew Kocur said it was no surprise to see Elson recognized by his peers with the captaincy, knowing full-well his impact a player and behind the scenes.
“Rorey just does so many good things on and off the ice, going back to last year, and even this off-season through training camp and around the rink. He definitely plays that blue-collar way that we want to play here and he leads by example,” Kocur said.
“He finishes checks, he works hard, he blocks shots, he chips in offensively, and he’s definitely a rah-rah guy that gets the guys going for us. They definitely feed off of all his energy.”
Elson himself, spoke to what it means to be recognized by his teammates, and take on the iconic mantle of Bruins’ captain.
“I’m really excited to have this honour,” Elson said with a smile. “Especially being the captain of such a great town and then just the team that we have this year… [I think of] all the great leaders I’ve had before me, Brady Wilson was one of them last year, there’s a couple of things I want to carry on from him and I’m looking forward to getting the season started.”
Alternate Captains
Like Elson, both Rennie and Andrews are heading into their second season with the Bruins as key returning pieces, while Williams – who was acquired in a summer blockbuster with the Battlefords – also has two years under his belt in the league.
Kocur said the trio’s experience and daily work habits are invaluable for an otherwise largely young team this season.
“They just work so hard in practice, they’re arguably our hardest working guys every day which is awesome for our group,” the coach said. “It’s a chance for our young guys to follow them every day on the ice and off the ice and in the gym, so we’re very excited about our leadership group and excited to see them take this next step here.”
The Bruins will kick-off their regular season this weekend with a home-and-home versus the division rival, Melville Millionaires. Friday’s season opener (Sept. 19) will be played in Melville, with Saturday night (Sept. 20) marking the Bruins’ home opener at Affinity Place.
Both games will begin at 7 p.m. and will be available on FloHockey and for free on the Bruins YouTube Livestream. Voice of the Bruins, Marty Martinson will have your call with pregame starting at 6:45 p.m.
To celebrate the home opener, the Bruins are also holding a special Season Opener Tailgate Party Saturday afternoon from 4-6 p.m.!
