Hawks Tie It Late, Win Game 1 In Double OT

Bruins Strike First in Battlefords

Michael Grant scored on a powerplay, 2:33 into double overtime, and the Nipawin Hawks won Game 1 of their Semi-Final series with Humboldt, 3-2 (2OT).

The Hawks opened the scoring with a Tyler Adams short-handed goal late in the first period, but they were forced to tie things up late.

Connor Lukan and Bryce Fiske scored 33 seconds apart in the second period to give the Broncos the lead, and Hawks’ defenseman Thomas Lenchyshyn (1g-1a) tied things up with 1:46 left in period three.

The Hawks were 1/7 on the powerplay, as the Broncos received four straight minors, two in the third period and one in each overtime.  Humboldt was 2/4 with the extra man.

Declan Hobbs made 33/35 saves in the win while Humboldt’s Parker Tobin turned away 44/47.

Game 2 goes Saturday in Nipawin.

The Estevan Bruins took Game 1 on the road, 5-3 over the Battlefords North Stars to take the early lead in their Best-of-Seven SJHL Semi-Final series.

The Bruins never trailed, as Arthur Miller and Jake Fletcher scored twice each and Zach Goberis opened the scoring and finished with a goal and an assist.  Bo Didur stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced. Estevan went 3/7 on the powerplay, improving to 5-and-0 in these playoffs, while ending the Stars’ post-season winning streak at 16 games.

Levi Kleiboer, MacGregor Sinclair and Brad Girard scored for the North Stars.  They’ll try to even the score when they host Game 2 on Saturday.
