Graduated Mustangs player Leyton Holoien is going to be joining the University of Regina Cougars for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

Holoien came to the Mustangs as a rookie in 2020. Only playing two games due to Covid, Holoien came back ready to go for the 2021-22 season, earning himself 4 goals and 16 assists in 45 games.

The 6’6 defenseman assumed a vital role for the Mustangs during his senior season. Holoien came out of the 2022-23 season with 50 games played 10 goals and 29 assists landing him 7th overall in the SJHL defenseman ratings in the regular season.

Before Holoien came to the SJHL, he was playing in the Alberta Minor Hockey League (AMHL) where he earned 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 points in 29 games in Red Deer Alberta. He also played four seasons with the Prairie Storm U15 and U18 AAA teams in Balgonie from 2015-2018, before he played for the Ponoka Stampeders and Central Alberta Selects U18.

Holoien is no stranger to the Regina area as he is from Emerald Park, Saskatchewan. The University of Regina is a part of the USPORTS league, Canada West division and finished 7th overall in their division last season.

The University of Regina’s season starts on September 8th when they take on locational rival University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
