The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Showcase in Warman has wrapped up, and it was a fruitful few days for the Melfort Mustangs.

Melfort defeated Melville in overtime on Tuesday morning, followed by a 3-1 win over Notre Dame the next afternoon. Defenceman Lucas Ochitwa said their latest stretch of three wins in a row hasn’t been pretty at times, but they’re getting the wins.

“Finding ways to get it done, that’s the biggest thing,” Ochitwa said. “They’re all character wins, they’re not blowouts by any means. We’re just finding ways, so it’s huge for the boys, huge for the team.”

Melfort now sits with a record of 5-1-0-1 after seven games, good for 11 points and a tie for first place in the SJHL.

Up next is a meeting with the La Ronge Ice Wolves in a home-and-home set that begins Friday night in Melfort. Ochitwa said while La Ronge’s 3-4 record has them at the bottom of the Sherwood Division, the Ice Wolves still has a dangerous forward group, and a talented goalie.

“We’re going to go in there with the mindset that we’re playing one of the top teams in the league,” he said. “And we’re going to grind it out and find a way to get those points.”
La Ronge forward Nolan Doell is tied for third in league scoring with 11 points.
Saturday night the teams will battle in La Ronge, and you can hear that game on 105CJVR with Mat Barrett’s pre-game show starting at 7:15.
