PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

By Mike Stackhouse

CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Jason Lavallee, Flin Flon Bombers
1996 F Jason Lavallee (Thetford Mines PQ) picked a great week to ramp up his play as there has been renewed added interest in Lavallee with a number of NCAA Division I schools.  Lavallee answered that interest by firing 5-goals and 3-assists in 2-games played over the week as the Bombers did their part to try and sneak back into first place in the Sherwood Division.  The big week runs his total to 30-goals and 37-assists in 52-games.  Runner up:  Jared Legien, Yorkton.
IBAS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK:  Nick Rein, Notre Dame Hounds
1996 D Nick Rein (Calgary AB) followed up his February Defenseman Of The Month nod by claiming the first Defenseman Of The Week selection after he picked up two goals and three assists in the first three games of this month.  Rein has seen his game blast off over the last five weeks with 6-goals and 12-assists in 15-games; which is fifth in the entire league over the time period in question.  Previously known as a conservative stay-at-home type of defender, Rein has shattered his career best offensive stats with 8-goals and 15-assists in 36-games this year (he had 14-assists and 0-goals in 110-junior games prior to this year).  Runner up:  Connor Sych, Battlefords.

SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK:  Nathan Hargrave, Yorkton Terriers
1996 G Nathan Hargrave (Abbotsford BC) backstopped the Yorkton Terriers to a pair of wins over the Melville Millionaires on the weekend, propelling the Terriers into the coveted sixth seed for the playoffs.  Hargrave blocked 32-of-33 on Friday night and then 25-of-26 one night later, on the road.  Hargrave stabilized the goaltending position upon being acquired from Weyburn midseason and went 15-and-11 with a 2.85-GAA and .919-SPCT.  Runner up:  Benjamin Patt, Notre Dame.

SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:  Nate Hooper, Flin Flon Bombers
1998 F Nate Hooper (Winnipeg MB) scored two goals on Friday night and then set up two on Saturday, both against the La Ronge Ice Wolves, to put a solid finishing touch on his first season in the SJHL (although the Bombers still have one game left to play).  Hooper has picked up seven points in his last 8-games and 8-goals and 21-assists in 52-games overall.  Runner up:  Joel Gryzbowski, Battlefords.
