PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Feb 12)

By Mike Stackhouse

CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Ben Allen, Melfort Mustangs
1997 F Ben Allen (Allen TX USA) ratcheted up his performance with his new team this past week, scoring 4-goals and 4-assists in 3-games played.  Allen led the Mustangs with two goals and two assists at the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon on Saturday as his club salvaged a split in the home and home series.  Earlier in the week, he sparked the Mustangs with 2-goals and 1-assist in a 5-2 win over Yorkton.  He’s up to 6-goals and 5-assists in 9-games since being acquired at the January 10 deadline.  Runner-up:  Layne Young, Battlefords.

SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK:  Taryn Kotchorek, Battlefords North Stars
1997 G Taryn Kotchorek (North Battleford SK) led the Stars to a pair of victories this week, including a 33-save shutout against La Ronge on Friday that put him at 13 career shutouts, which is believed to be an all-time SJHL record.  He also stopped 18-of-19 in a win over Weyburn on Thursday.  He’s 15-and-7 on the year with a 2.44-GAA and .916 SPCT.  He has four shutouts this season.  Runner-up:  Parker Tobin, Humboldt.

IBAS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK:  Loch Morrison, Melfort Mustangs
1997 D Loch Morrison (Prince Albert SK) would, perhaps, be a runaway winner as the league’s top blueliner this year if it weren’t for the presence of Josh McDougall.  Morrison had another stellar week in compiling 1-goal and 5-assists in 3-games played.  Four of those points came on Saturday in Flin Flon as the Mustangs rebounded from losing their home game on Friday.  Morrison picked up helpers in each of his club’s other two games this past week.  He now has 18-goals and 37-assists in 46-games.  Runner-up:  Daniel Liberty, Melville.

MYSASK 411 SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:  Crystopher Collin, Flin Flon Bombers
1999 F Crystopher Collin (Bois de Filion PQ) sparked the Bombers to a big win over Melfort on Friday night, scoring twice and setting up two others in an unlikely 6-4 win on the road.  Collin sparked a three goal third period with a goal and an assist early in the frame.  For the week, he ended up with 2-goals and 4-assists in 3-games played.  For the season, he’s got 22-goals and 22-assists in 39-games.  Runner-up:  Logan Hunter, Humboldt.
