CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brad Girard, Battlefords North Stars
1998 F Brad Girard (Slave Lake AB) helped the North Stars to two wins, in three games, this past week by scoring two goals and two assists. Girard started the week with two goals, including the tying marker with a minute and a half left in the third as the Stars downed Nipawin in a shootout on Tuesday. He had one assist in each of his club’s two games in Flin Flon over the weekend, both one goal outcomes with the Stars winning on Friday and the Bombers taking Saturday. Girard, acquired earlier in the year from Olds (AJHL), has 4-goals and 11-assists in 19-games played. Runner-up: Rock Ruschkowski, Melfort.
SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK: Evan Plotnik, Melfort Mustangs
1997 G Evan Plotnik (Capistrano Beach CA USA) turned away 54-of-55 shots in two starts this week, both of which were Mustang wins. On Tuesday, he made 22-saves as the Mustangs shutout the Flin Flon Bombers 3-0. Saturday, he blocked 32-of-33 in a 6-1 decision over La Ronge. Plotnik has been extremely reliable all year long and now boasts an 18-5-and-1 record with a 2.13-GAA and .927-SPCT. He has 2 shutouts. Runner-up: Justen Close, Kindersley.
IBAS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK: Loch Morrison, Melfort Mustangs
1997 D Loch Morrison (Prince Albert SK) scored two goals and two assists in three games played this past week. The blueliner continues to lead the Mustangs in scoring this year with 14-goals and 29-assists in 36-games. He’s second amongst SJHL defensemen in points and eleventh overall in scoring. He assisted on a goal in Flin Flon on Tuesday and then followed it up with a goal in La Ronge on Friday. He had a goal and an assist against the Ice Wolves on Saturday. Runner-up: Johnny Witzke, Estevan.
MYSASK 411 SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Austin Mikesch, Nipawin Hawks
1998 F Austin Mikesch (Howard WI USA) has been on a tear since the calendar flipped to 2018 and he reeled off four goals in three games played this past week, stretching his goal scoring streak to five games overall. He’s scored in six of the last seven. He picked up a pair in Melville on Friday and also scored against them on Saturday. He had a goal in a shootout loss to Battlefords earlier in the week. He now has 15-goals and 7-assists in 33-games played this year. Runner-up: Matthias Urbanski, Battlefords.
