SGEU MVP of the Week: Aidyn Hutchinson, Melfort Mustangs

The Melfort Mustangs had several great contributions over the weekend as they started the year 2-0, and leading the charge was Aidyn Hutchinson. The 20-year-old from St.Albert, Alberta only registered an assist in the Mustangs’ impressive 8-4 win over La Ronge, but then had a big performance Saturday at the Whitney Forum where he netted the game-winning goal in overtime to help secure the 2-1 win for the Mustangs. He also had an assist on the game-tying goal.

Bourgault Forward of the Week: Matthew Van Blaricom, Humboldt BroncosĀ 

Similar to the Mustangs, the Broncos started off the year with a 2-0 record and forward Matthew Van Blaricom started the season with a bang. The 17-year-old found the back of the net in the team’s Home Opener Saturday and then added a goal and two assists Sunday afternoon in the Broncos’ 6-3 victory in Wilcox against the Hounds. Van Blaricom earned a NCAA Div 1 commitment last year to Michigan Tech.

SuperU Defenceman of the Week: Tristan Sarrao, Humboldt Broncos

Tristan Sarrao also had a great pair of games for the Humboldt Broncos on the blue line. After playing solid defensively in Humboldt’s Home Opener, the The 19-year-old Defenceman also had a three point night in Wilcox against the Hounds. The Calgary, Alberta product matched his point total from last season with his performance in the opening weekend.

DirectWest Rookie of the Week: Trevor Stenglein, Flin Flon Bombers

It was an explosive start to his SJHL career for Bombers rookie forward Trevor Stenglein. In his first game in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the 18-year-old forward found the back of the net twice to help vault the Bombers to a 5-3 win in Nipawin. He would also score the lone goal Saturday in Flin Flon’s Home Opener where they fell 2-1 in overtime to Melfort.

Sasktel Goalie of the Week: Dazza Mitchell, Weyburn Red Wings

Fans of the Weyburn Red Wings and Yorkton Terriers didn’t see many goals this weekend, but they did see some excellent goaltending. Dazza Mitchell was superb for the Weyburn Red Wings, helping the club earn three out of a possible four points. The 19-year-old from Regina allowed just two goals over the weekend and had a shutout Saturday in the Wings 1-0 win in Yorkton.

Saskatchewan Player of the Week: Zac Somers, Melfort Mustangs (from Melfort, Sask)

Despite missing the entire pre-season, Zac Somers didn’t miss a beat when it comes to his play on the ice. In two games this weekend, Somers had a goal and two assists as they earned a pair of victories. Somers, a University of Maine commit, is back with the Mustangs for his 3rd season.
