For the seventh episode of our 2024-25 SJHL RBC Community Ambassadors, we highlight Joey Lies of the Flin Flon Bombers.
RBC Community Ambassadors are recognized for making a difference and giving back to the communities where they play. Each Ambassador is celebrated at an RBC Game Night* and will be honoured by a donation from RBC to a school in their local community.
SJHL fans will be able to vote online for the RBC Community Ambassador of their choice to be honoured as the recipient of the RBC Community Award at the end of the SJHL regular season. This additional honour is accompanied by an additional donation from RBC in the player’s name to a school in their local community.
Joey’s $1,000 donation from RBC will go to Ruth Betts School in Flin Flon, MB.
According to the Bombers, the Flin Flon local Lies “is currently in his third season as a Bomber and this will be his third time as our team’s nominee for the SJHL RBC Community Ambassador award.
“During the 2023-2024 season, Joey was named the winner of this prestigious award. Joey was also named our teams most popular player, which was voted on by our fans at the conclusion of last season. During Joey’s time as a Bomber, he has spent numerous hours being involved in the community as well as having a positive influence on the youth. Joey is currently a mentor at the Flin Flon School Division at Ruth Betts, where he also worked last year. He is involved with minor hockey as a volunteer coach and he assists with refereeing, when they are short. Joey also takes part in the Learn to Skate program twice a week as an instructor. He also recently became a private skills coach and does lessons with minor hockey players in the mornings before our practices.
Joey is extremely passionate about the community he grew up in and he understands the positive influence he has on the youth. You won’t find Joey without a smile on his face at any of our community events and he is someone that will never hesitate to offer up his time to help out in the community. In my time coaching the Flin Flon Bombers, we have had a lot of players that have done a great job being involved in the community. However, Joey Lies is by far the best player I’ve coached when it comes to community involvement.”
