REGINA, SK – It was a night of more firsts in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
The La Ronge Ice Wolves hosted the Flin Flon Bombers for the first regular-season game with the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre as their official home rink.
Ryder Mucha notched a pair, and the Bombers fired 54 shots at Riley Zezel in the Ice Wolves’ net as Flin Flon took down La Ronge 5-1 on the evening.
Owen Parks became the answer to a trivia question: the first goalscorer in the history of the Warman Wolverines, which he accomplished 5:26 into the club’s 3-1 defeat in Humboldt at the hands of the Broncos. Charlie Tritt made 33 more saves to follow up his opening night shutout, and Avery Lowe scored the winner for the Green and Gold right at the 10-minute mark of the opening frame.
In Kindersley, it was the new Battlefords’ head coach, Connor Logan, who earned his first victory as an SJHL head coach as Anthony Campbell counted two goals and an assist en route to a 6-3 North Stars’ win over the Klippers. Kaegan Lowe scored twice in defeat and is one of four SJHLers with three goals already on the campaign.
The Estevan Bruins scored four in a row, paced by captain Rorey Elson’s goal and an assist, and held on to hand head coach Drew Kocur his first win since the removal of his interim tag in the off-season. Leo Jewitt replied with a pair of goals for the Mils, whose three goals in five minutes in the third period made the contest interesting. Ultimately, the Affinity Place faithful went home happy with a 5-3 victory for the home side.
Finally, in Yorkton, the defending Viterra/Bunge Division champions and Canterra Seeds Cup finalist Weyburn Red Wings flexed their collective muscles during a 6-2 win over the Terriers. Drew Molde scored twice and added a helper for Weyburn, while Gabrielle Courchesne scored his third of the year in the loss.
