Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League

Andrew Henderson

By Dave Leaderhouse

Moving his way through the western provinces during his junior career, Andrew Henderson has landed in the hockey hotbed of Wilcox and so far the 20-year-old has been the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s workhorse in goal while with the Notre Dame Hounds.

The native of Maple Ridge, B.C., who has spent time with the Ridge Meadow Flames of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League and two seasons with the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League before joining Notre Dame, has been between the pipes for more than 700 minutes of action early in his stint in the SJHL.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Henderson got off to a bit of a rough start with the Hounds as he surrendered 15 goals in three of his first four outings, but those results were sandwiched around a shutout performance in just his second appearance.

His overall mark is now 5-5-0-0 with a 3.13 goals-against average and .902 save percentage. All of those numbers have improved dramatically as the season has progressed resulting in Notre Dame picking up points in seven of its last 10 games and making the Global Ag Risk Solutions Division race the most competitive in the league.

Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Henderson endured a couple of tough seasons in Olds where the Grizzlys were at or near the bottom of their division. Despite the lack of team success, however, he posted some impressive numbers. In his first year with the Grizzlys, Henderson had a 3.56 GAA and .903 save percentage in 33 appearances while last year those numbers dropped slightly to 3.80 and .887 in 36 games. Henderson started his move east after he finished his midget career with the Vancouver Chiefs while also seeing action with the Ridge Meadows Flames.

The Hounds are going to be in a battle with Kindersley, Humboldt and the Battlefords all season for positioning in the tough Global Ag Risk Solutions Division, but if Henderson continues to settle into his new surroundings then Notre Dame should be a formidable challenge each and every game.
