Canterra Seeds Cup Final 2025 Preview

REGINA, SK—The 2025 Canterra Seeds SJHL Final will feature the league’s Nos. 1 and 3 seeds, the Melfort Mustangs and Weyburn Red Wings, respectively.

Melfort defeated the Kindersley Klippers and Yorkton Terriers in consecutive five-game series.

Weyburn downed the No. 6 Battlefords North Stars in six in Round 1, then struck out to a 3-0 series lead in Round 2 with the Flin Flon Bombers before hanging on for a 4-2, six-game series win.

It is the Mustangs’ second final in a row, after they took the title a campaign ago. The Red Wings have not been in the league championship series since 2012, when they fell to the Humboldt Broncos in six games.

Melfort has been in three of the last five SJHL finals series, going back to 2019, the last one before the pandemic.

Melfort’s Finals Record: 5-2 (Won in 1992, 1996, 2015, 2016 & 2024 – Lost in 1994 & 2019)

Series Burning Questions:

  • By how much is Weyburn the underdog?
  • Who will win the goalie duel between two of the league’s best, Weyburn’s Angelo Zol and Melfort’s Kristian Coombs?
  • Does Weyburn’s defence have the depth to handle Melfort’s depth up front?
  • Can Weyburn’s power play get going (6th in the regular season, but over six percentage points worse in the playoffs)?
  • How much will Melfort’s vast experience from last year matter?

Every game in the SJHL Final will be broadcast live on SaskTel on maxTV and maxTV Stream Channels 48/348, as well as on FloHockey.
