REGINA, SK – Friday night in the league had all the drama.

Four of the five games went to overtime, with three of those victors having to rally in the third period to send proceedings into the extra frame.

The Weyburn Red Wings and the SJHL honoured the great Ron Rumball with a touching pre-game ceremony. It was only fitting that the game itself was the season’s first rendition of the Highway 39 rivalry with the Estevan Bruins, and the tilt lived up to its billing.

Bruins veteran Rylan Williams capped the Estevan comeback from down three with 10 minutes remaining, when he poked home a loose puck with just 17 seconds left in regulation. It was Weyburn who would have the last laugh, however, as Luke Dekay sniped high blocker on a two-on-one at the 3:14 mark of overtime to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

Rookie Roan Burgess notched a hat trick in the win.

In Kindersley, it was the Warman Wolverines who dramatically earned their first-ever victory by way of a third-period tying goal from Wylie Smith, and a bullet wrist shot from captain Vinny Palmarin in overtime. Warman took the contest 6-5 after the lead had changed hands four times.

The two-time defending champion Melfort Mustangs needed a two-goal third-period rally, but found a way to tie the game against the La Ronge Ice Wolves at three and head to extra time. New Mustangs captain Zayden Sadlemyer’s overtime goal was enough for a hat-trick, and a 4-3 victory.

Humboldt star Jacob Strizzi tied the game at three in Melville with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. Then Logan Flint scored the winner in the shootout as the Broncos handed the Millionaires a 4-3 defeat.

Finally, at Nipawin’s home opener, Flin Flon Bombers newcomer Nathan Lalumiere picked up the third hat-trick of the evening in the league en route to a smooth 4-1 win over the Hawks.

Humboldt and Flin Flon remain the only clubs in the league with perfect records.
