REGINA, SK – Nipawin Hawks’ forward Mason Karakochuk has been named the second star of the month of February by the Canadian Junior Hockey League.

Riding a 12-game heater during the time frame, Karakochuk had at least one point in each of the dozen outings he skated in, including supplying eight multi-point efforts for Nipawin.

For the 19-year-old Saskatoon, Sask., product, he notched 12 tallies for the Hawks, including a game-winner, and dished out a dozen assists to go along with it.

Averaging over a point-per-game with Nipawin so far this season, Karakochuk is currently tied for ninth in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League scoring, entering the final weekend of their regular season, with 54 points, in 46 outings, on 22 goals and 32 assists. Those are all personal bests for him in a single SJHL campaign.

TORONTO – The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) announced Thursday that Tre Altiman, (G) Leamington Flyers (OJHL); Mason Karakochuk, (F) Nipawin Hawks (SJHL) and Darien Thomson, (F) Edmundston Blizzard (MHL) have been named its 3 Stars of the Month – Fuelled by Gatorade, for February.

1st Star: Tre Altiman, (G) Leamington Flyers (OJHL) – The 20-year-old netminder from Chatham, Ont., went 9-1-0-0 overall, including collecting eight straight victories to close out the month. His only defeat was a one-goal setback to the Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season title holders, the Toronto Patriots.

In all, Altiman allowed just 12 pucks to get past him in 561 minutes of action with Leamington in February to sport a crisp 1.28 goals-against average, to go with an equally sharp save percentage of .959. He also registered two shutouts, while in five of his other appearances, he only gave up one marker.

Throughout the campaign, Altiman shared the OJHL-lead in wins (27); was second in GAA (1.78); tied for top spot in SV% (.942) and led all goalkeepers in his league in shutouts (7), with those seven currently being the most of any netminder in the entire 116-team CJHL this season. He also went 18-2-0-0 in his final 20 appearances for the Flyers.

3rd Star: Darien Thomson, (F) Edmundston Blizzard (MHL) – Helping Edmundston go unbeaten in regulation during February, Thomson’s efforts aided in his club compiling a 6-0-1-1 mark.

In those eight contests played for the Blizzard, the 19-year-old from Fredericton, N.B., etched his name on the game sheet in each of them, which featured a two-goal, four-assist effort back on Feb. 7 against the Pictou County Weeks Crushers.

Averaging nearly two and a half points per game last month, Thomson scored in seven of eight, notching eight in total, and chipped in with 11 helpers, for 19 points. Two of his tallies were game-winners and Thomson helped set-up a pair of other deciding markers for Edmundston as he went on to finish up third in Maritime Hockey League scoring with career highs in goals (40); assists (36) and points (76).
