The Melfort Mustangs are pleased to announce that Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins has signed a three year extension to his contract. Blevins took over as head coach midway through the 2013/2014 season for a team that was last in the standings. The Mustangs made a late season comeback with Blevins behind the bench, finishing third in the league and winning the Sherwood Division Pennant.
In his first full season as an SJHL Head Coach in 2014-15 the Mustangs welcomed 17 returning players. The Mustangs would finish the season with 39 wins, 8 losses, 3 over-time losses, and 6 shootout losses resulting in a win percentage of 0.777 during the regular season. The record the team built earned them a 2nd straight Sherwood Division title and 1stplace overall in the SJHL. The team carried that momentum into the post season and lost only 2 games in their playoff run to claim their first league championship in 19 years.
With 12 returning players for the 2015/2016 season, the organization finished second overall in the SJHL standings and won their third straight Sherwood Division banner. That team posted a record of 39 games won, 14 losses, 3 overtime losses and 2 shootout losses resulting in a winning percentage of 0.716. The team achieved playoff success again, winning their second straight Canalta Cup Championship.
Over the course of his time in Melfort, the team has graduated multiple players into all levels of hockey. The coaching staff makes it a priority to develop their players both on and off the ice. We look forward to having Trevor for another three years and wish him the all the best in the coming seasons.
