Mustangs hand Stars first loss of the season

The unblemished record of the Battlefords North Stars is no more as the Melfort Mustangs went into the ACC in Battlefords and won 2-1 in a shootout. Joel Favreau was superb in the win, making 35 saves and stopping all 3 shooters in the shootout. The win also snaps the Mustangs 4 game losing skid. Melfort will look to win their 2nd game in as many nights Saturday when they head to Kindersley to face the Klippers.

The Estevan Bruins won their 7th in a row Friday night as they shutout the Kindersley Klippers 3-0 at the West Central Events Centre. Salvatore Collora scored his first of the season on the man advantage in the middle stanza to break the ice and it would stand as the game winner. Cody Davis and Mitch Kohner had the other markers for Estevan and Cam Hrdlicka made 37 saves for the shutout. This marked the 3rd consecutive game in which Kindersley didn’t score. Estevan will look for their 8th straight win when they visit Battlefords Saturday.

After a day off Thursday, both the La Ronge Ice Wolves and Flin Flon Bombers continued their 4 game in 5 night road trips and both of them got back in the win column. La Ronge earned a 3-2 win over the Melville Millionaires with Ethan Strik breaking a 2-2 tie with 3:59 remaining in the 3rd. The Ice Wolves’ road trip concludes Saturday in Yorkton against the Terriers. Meanwhile, in Weyburn, the Flin Flon Bombers doubled up the Weyburn Red Wings 6-3.  Newcomer Wyatt Cook netted a pair for the Bombers which included the game winner. Flin Flon will finish their road trip in Wilcox Saturday night against the Hounds.

Finally, the Humboldt Broncos bounced back in a big way following their first loss of the season Tuesday as they picked up an 11-4 over the Nipawin Hawks. Humboldt found the back of the net six times in the opening frame and they never looked back. Jacob Boucher led the charge for the Broncos as he racked up 3 goals and 2 assists in the victory. Humboldt will be back at home Saturday as they host the Melville Millionaires.

Saturday will be another busy night in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey league with another five games on tap.
