PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Feb 25)

CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Michael Makarenko, Nipawin Hawks
2000 F Michael Makarenko (Calgary AB) paced the Hawks with four goals and three assists in three games played this past week, doing so without regular linemate and team captain Jake Tremblay, who is dealing with an injury.  Makarenko had back to back two goal and one assist games against Weyburn and Melville as the Hawks won both of those encounters. He had an assist on Saturday against Estevan in a comeback bid that came up just a touch short.  Makarenko has taken his offensive game to the next level in his second Junior ‘A’ season as he is up to 18-goals and 24-assists in 55-games after scoring 17-points as a rookie. Runner-up: Tian Rask, Melfort.

MAYFAIR DIAGNOSTICS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK:  Douglas Scott, Humboldt Broncos
2000 D Douglas Scott (North Vancouver BC) exploded on Family Day Monday for a 4-goal, 1-assist performance in a 6-3 win over Kindersley.  Three of Scott’s goals came on the powerplay. Two nights later, Scott assisted on three goals in an 8-0 win over the Melville Millionaires and that expands his overall season totals to 8-goals and 15-assists in 24-games since arriving in a trade earlier this year.  Runner-up: Adam Victorino, Flin Flon.

SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK:  Shawn Parkinson, Melfort Mustangs
1999 G Shawn Parkinson (Victoria BC) is heating up at just the right time.  Parkinson led the Mustangs to three wins in a row this past week, making 20-saves on 22-shots against Estevan on Tuesday and then he followed that up with 17-saves on 18-shots in a win over Notre Dame on Friday and then he posted a 15-save shutout over Weyburn on Saturday.  Parkinson is second in the SJHL in minutes played and tied for third in wins. Overall, he’s 22-11-5-and-1 with a 2.52-GAA and .914-SPCT. He’s also got two shutouts. Runner-up: Philippe Bond, Yorkton.

DIRECTWEST SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:  Karter McNarland, Humboldt Broncos
2003 F Karter McNarland (Saskatoon SK) hasn’t let age get in the way of being one of the best rookies in the SJHL this season.  Despite being a 16-year-old in a league where most rookies are 18-years-old, McNarland has been near the top of the freshman scoring parade all season and he padded his totals this past week with 6-assists in 2-games played.  McNarland had three assists in both contests, the win over Kindersley last Monday and the shutout over Melville on Wednesday. For the year, McNarland has 10-goals and 38-assists in 55-games. He’s second amongst SJHL rookies in points and first in assists.  Runner-up: Tyler Savage, Estevan.
