Power Rankings Jan 30th

The SJHL Power Rankings are decided every week by a group of SJHL broadcasters and will be released each Tuesday.

1. Flin Flon Bombers 34-2-2-0 (Last Week 1st):

The Flin Flon Bombers are the first team to officially clinch a playoff spot in the SJHL following their weekend sweep of the Battlefords North Stars. For the 12th week in a row, they are the top team in the CJHL Top 20 rankings and there should be no surprise seeing them at the top of the SJHL Power Rankings. Following the SJHL/MJHL Showcase, they will return to the ice on Friday when they host the Nipawin Hawks for “Hockey Night in the North”, where admission to the game is free for everyone.

2. Battlefords North Stars 29-8-3-1 (Last Week 2nd):

It wasn’t the results the Battlefords North Stars would have liked this past weekend against the 1st place Flin Flon Bombers, but in total, they did earn three out of a possible six points this past week, and as of right now they have a firm grasp on 2nd place in the SJHL standings. The Stars will be looking for a bounce back this weekend when they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves at the ACC.

3. Melfort Mustangs 27-11-3-0 (Last Week 3rd):

Just the one game for the Melfort Mustangs this past week and they earned an important two points on the road in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Hounds. The Mustangs sit 3rd in the SJHL standings and were an honourable mention in the CJHL Top 20 rankings for this week. Following the SJHL/MJHL Showcase, Melfort will return to the ice on Saturday when they hit the road to Nipawin for a meeting with the Hawks.

4. Humboldt Broncos 25-12-3-1 (Last Week 4th):

After a big win in Weyburn this past Thursday, the Humboldt Broncos ended up dropping both games at Affinity Place against the Estevan Bruins. The Broncos have been on a bit of a slide as of late as the club owns a 4-5-1-0 record in their last 10 and have now fallen three points back of Melfort for 3rd and eight points back of Battlefords for 2nd. They will be back at it Friday in Melville as they kick off a weekend home and home with the Millionaires.

5. Melville Millionaires 20-17-0-0 (Last Week 5th):

After a tough loss in North Battleford last Tuesday, the Melville Millionaires responded with key victories against the Kindersley Klippers and Weyburn Red Wings. They now have a little bit of breathing room when it comes to being in a playoff spot and now the Mills have their eyes set on potentially catching the Humboldt Broncos for 4th. The Mills are 14 points back of Humboldt, but do have four games in hand and have a huge home and home with the Broncos set for this coming weekend.

6. Estevan Bruins 18-19-1-2 (Last Week 8th):

The week didn’t start great for the Estevan Bruins this past week with a lop-sided loss to the Notre Dame Hounds, but two big wins at home over the weekend over the Humboldt Broncos have vaulted the Bruins back into a playoff spot and 6th place in the SJHL standings. They will look to keep the ball rolling this weekend as they battle the Yorkton Terriers in a home-and-home beginning Friday in Estevan.

7. Weyburn Red Wings 15-18-0-5 (Last Week 6th):

Two heartbreaking losses for the Weyburn Red Wings this past week have them on the outside looking in right now when it comes to a playoff spot in the SJHL. The good news for the Wings is the teams ahead of them have all played more games than them. They will also battle a team directly ahead of them in the SJHL standings twice this weekend as they head to Kindersley for a pair of games against the Klippers.

8. Kindersley Klippers 16-20-2-2 (Last Week 7th):

In their lone game of the week, the Klippers dropped a disappointing 6-3 decision at home to the Melville Millionaires in a game they got down 5-0 at one point. They are currently in the 8th and final playoff spot but can get some breathing room this weekend potentially with a good showing against the Weyburn Red Wings in their two games on Friday and Saturday.

9. Yorkton Terriers 14-22-1-2 (Last Week 9th):

It was an off week for the Yorkton Terriers as they sit and scoreboard watch. They got some help in some regards and remain just five points back of a playoff spot. They will look to gain some ground this weekend in their home and home with the Estevan Bruins.

10. Nipawin Hawks 16-20-0-4 (Last Week 10th):

The Nipawin Hawks have lost five straight and are falling down the SJHL standings. It was a missed opportunity for the Hawks this past weekend in La Ronge as they blew a 2-1 lead late in the 3rd period to fall 3-2 to the Ice Wolves. It won’t get any easier for the Hawks this coming weekend as they head to Flin Flon Friday and are home to Melfort Saturday.

11. La Ronge Ice Wolves 14-24-2-1 (Last Week 11th):

Similar to Yorkton, the La Ronge Ice Wolves are just five points back of a playoff spot, but only have 15 games remaining on their schedule. The Wolves will leave the friendly confines of the Mel this weekend and head to the ACC in North Battleford for a pair of contests against the Battlefords North Stars.

12. Notre Dame Hounds 11-29-2-0 (Last Week 12th):

The Notre Dame Hounds played a pair of games this week at home and earned a split. Overall, the Hounds are playing some much better hockey as they look to try and climb out of the basement of the SJHL standings. Notre Dame is off this week and will return to action on Wednesday, February 7th when they host the Flin Flon Bombers.
