TENTH STRAIGHT PLAYOFF WIN FOR STARS

By Craig Stein

2-0 SERIES LEAD HEADING TO FLIN FLON

The Battlefords North Stars are now 10-and-0 in the 2017 SJHL playoffs, and now lead the Canalta Cup Final 2-0 after a 5-1 decision over the Flin Flon Bombers Saturday night in Battlefords.

That gives the Stars an opportunity to potentially hoist their first Canalta Cup in 17 years when the series shifts to Flin Flon next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Five different North Stars found the net in Game 2, as Reed Delainey and Layne Young made it 2-0 late in the first period.  Logan Nachtegaele stretched it to 3-0 midway through the second, before Coby Downs and Keaton Holinaty padded their lead in the third.  Flin Flon’s Daylan Marchi scored with four seconds left in the second period.

After Taryn Kotchorek earned the shutout in Game 1, Joel Gryzbowski was one save away from the same result the next night, and he was much busier, making 31/32 saves as the Bombers out-shot the Stars 32-31.

Brenden Newton made 26 saves for the Bombers, who will host Game 3 at the Whitney Forum Tuesday at 7:30 Manitoba time, and Game 4 on Wednesday.
